Milestones
My oldest daughter turns ten tomorrow. TEN. As in, a decade. That somehow seems unbelievable to me. How did this go so fast? And yet, the time in my life before she arrived in it, seems sort of vague. A fuzzy memory of another life. One with muted colors and soft music. My life vividly came into focus on the day of her birth. I remember the moment I was about to meet her. I was being wheeled down a hallway (she and I had a rough labor and delivery). Bryn and the nurse were talking to me, but I couldn’t hear anything over the pounding of my heart. I was shaking and my breathing was fast and then there she was. I knew in that moment, that my life would never be the same, that I would never be the same.
There is a Sanskrit word that I love, ananda. It means, in one translation, extraordinary happiness. A moment of joy that is more than ordinary. Those moments that steal your breath. You experience these moments several times in your life, and the one thing they all have in common is that you are fully present in the moment. You do not dwell in the past or hover over the future, but abandon yourself to the now. That day ten years ago was one of those moments and I’ve had so many more of them since she entered this life. I look back over ten years of milestones, of ups and downs and I think of the many more that she will go through. They are my milestones too, as her Mom, her coach, her teacher. So to celebrate I watched videos of her as a baby, a toddler, a little girl and I cried. Like, a lot. And I hope I do this every year, regardless of her age. I hope I am as grateful every year as I am right now.
Happy 10th Bday to my son, Sawyer! A boy that truly lives up to his name! A review of a decade of fun in 15 seconds. Love ya, Buddy! #todaystomsawyer #turningten
