imo i think there’s room for “outsider” perspectives and “good at videogames” is kind of a nebulous concept since someone who owns at a fighting game may be a shitty with FPS or platformers

oh don’t get me wrong, i’m not saying people shouldn’t write their own reviews and thinkpieces and w/e unless they’re Godlike At Game, just that if you’re doing general game reviews for a games site for actual money you should be more than just competent at playing them

and yea some people are better at some genres than others, but ideally they wouldn’t be reviewing genres that they’re unknowledgable/bad at in the first place. like i’ve played like 3 non-pokemon jrpgs in my whole life and i definitely wouldn’t trust myself to do a decent review of one cause it would be mad misinformed
