my headcanon so far like

I remember a time pre idw mmpr x over/Rrmnt/MM were Black fans had to fight to get the fact that turtles do touch Black culture through hip-hop and popular NYC youth culture to simply be acknowledged. But because Black culture is considered cool without being attached to the people who made it (A culture without a people, not really cultural artifacts or artwork but coolness made to appeal to [white] youth and sell products nothing more) it was an uphill battle.

The idea that the turtles isolation, rejection, and otherness could speak to the Black experience was unthinkable and uncomfortable, because proximity to Blackness stains and taints. Because it forces people to consider us as multifaceted human beings and forces them to consider that they may be in some small way responsible for those feelings. So it's deny and attack any mention of this. "They're green dude. If they'd be anything they'd be Japanese. All east Asians are pale. Stop trying to steal from Asians." Stop talking about this.

I remember back in the day when the discussion on whether Raph was black coded or just from Brooklyn was happening. I think a lot of early Raphs are white or aracial tbh but 03 had young me be like???? Is this a wigga and why do I feel that way🤔. So seeing all the fan art of Black turtles really makes me smile.
