"College Boy" Nickname Analysis
All monsters that work at Monsters Inc. have made their way in somehow. Some of them graduated, some did not. And for sure, many monsters attended College before they got there. So why does Duncan call specifically Tylor a 'college boy'..? Here's what I think of it:
He Has Been There Before with Another 'College Boy/Girl' When Duncan first met Tylor in the first episode "Welcome to Monsters, Incorporated", he immediately called him to talk in private for a 'couple of things he wanted to mention'. A they talk, Duncan seems to already know what Tylor is doing, completing his sentences like: Tylor: I don't.. Both: ..belong here Duncan: "Yeah.. as if he has listened to all those 'lies' before. Then, he almost immediately cut to the chase and revealed his position and goals, as well as the fact that he (thinks he) knows what Tylor is planning: Duncan: You can forget your little "college boy" plan... Tylor: Wait, what? Duncan: ...of waltzing in here and taking what's rightfully mine, you understand? Tylor: There's no... Duncan: I'm onto your scheme. So, either someone tired to make a fool out of him before and now he's suspicious of everyone OR he just thinks that if the MIFT Supervisor job is so perfect to him, it's what others are after, too. As we see in "Little Monsters" he even suspects a little kid for planning to steal his dream job from him: Duncan: You don't have any interest in Fritz's job, do you? Oscar (kid): No. Duncan: Then you wouldn't mind signing a simple contract to legalize your response.
He Didn't Go to/Didn't Graduate College Based on his insecure and defensive behavior, you can tell that Duncan has worked hard to reach the position he's holding now, and he's just one step before succeeding his dreams, and of course, he wouldn't let anyone ruin that for him. Tylor: Why is this supervisor thing so important to you anyway? Duncan: If you think that bein' supervisor someday is all I've ever wanted, and that messin' this up is somehow gonna crush my hopes and dreams, then that's, uh, you know... ( Sighs ) Tylor: Oh, Duncan, I, uh... I didn't mean to... Duncan: It's none of your business. Now, get to work. --("The Cover-Up") He sure has been there for years trying to get a higher rank and be worthy enough to be a Supervisor. Maybe one of the reasons he wants that job so bad is because it's what would prove his mother he can succeed. Besides, it's pretty obvious in the show that Duncan is very very fond of his mom as he seem to always call her on the phone, writing to her, referring to her as his "dearest mother" and letting her know what he's being through and how close to his dream he is. Additionally, his mother seems to be a very strict mom. If that's the case, then Duncan would do anything to finally impress her and make her proud! Maybe he failed in College and now he sees that job as the only chance for him to succeed in his life, become important and gain respect. It has become his life goal and he wouldn't let any "college boy" come and ruin everything he has built all those years, just because he's educated and congenial, 'fooling' his team with his college skills and his kind personality. He doesn't deserve the job of a supervisor just because of that!
He Finds Tylor Very Attractive If in business world the first impression is important, so it is in our everyday life! And what if Duncan is afraid of Tylor invading his space because he likes him, but he tries to stay maintained to his goas and keep four eyes on the handsome boy instead of trusting him, because he's afraid that if he let himself fall for him, he'd also fall into his trap of getting blind of love and not seeing what Tylor's actually planning. Maybe he is just trying to hold his feelings back and bury them deep inside. Maybe he calls him "college boy" because Tylor is that kind of good ol' top-student, kind, muscular, tall and handsome guy in College that every girl would fall in love with. But Duncan doesn't want to be tricked by his beautiful eyes and lose the game. Besides, he has made it clear in "Meet MIFT" that he finds him beautiful anyway: Duncan: All right, pretty boy. Here's a type A-188 series B canister. The screen valve's about to experience a catastrophic failure in 23 seconds. Here's the manual. Go.
All the above was some theories of mine based on the characters' quotes and behavior. Please don't take this too seriously as it's just made for fun~ :)
