Nicholas Reeves, in reference to Tutankhamun’s tomb
Dear News Reporters. No one is more thrilled that you are talking about Tutankhamun and Nefertiti on the news, but it is Nef-er-ti-ti not Nef-ra-ti-ti. Cheers, Em.
Tutankhamun’s Death Mask Intended for Nefertiti
Tutankhamun’s Death Mask is not only one of the most iconic pieces from the famed Boy-Pharaoh’s tomb, but from Ancient Egypt in general. Sparking gold, it is truly magnificent to behold, a befitting symbol of the might and prowess of the Pharaoh and his empire. Unfortunately in 2015, the mask was damaged when the false beard became separated from the mask and was repaired with epoxy. During the detailed restoration of the mask, removing the epoxy and reattaching the beard, opportunity was made available to re-investigate one of the most important artefacts of the Ancient World. Investigation of the mask has been surprisingly minimal considering its great fame, this most recent investigation has yielded surprising and exciting results.
Like the Death Mask of Tutankhamun, the Bust of Nefertiti is an icon of the Ancient World. It not only represents the power of Egypt and its Royal Family, but beauty and femininity. This is the most prominent representation of the mysterious Queen whose eventual fate is unknown, recent inquiries are being made into the tomb of Tutankhamun, with the suggestion it may lead to the tomb of Nefertiti. With this hypothesis being investigated, it is interesting to read another theory linking the two monarchs, that the Death Mask of Tutankhamun, was never intended for him, but Nefertiti.
Dr Reeves points out “A fresh examination of the mask in Cairo at the end of September 2015 yielded for the first time, beneath the hieroglyphs of Tutankhamun’s praenomen (personal name), lightly chased traces of an earlier, erased royal name,” that cartouche on the reverse of the the mask original held the name ‘Ankhkheprure Neferneferuaten’ a title associated with Nefertiti. Further evidence which supports his hypothesis is the presence of pierced ears on the mask, a feature reserved only for women and children.
If this mask is indeed originally intended as a funerary object of Nefertiti, it is further evidence of the possibility for her tomb within the Valley of the Kings. Furthermore it is evidence that she attained the Status of Co-Regent, or perhaps Pharaoh in her own right.

Blinded by the piece’s sheer beauty and enormous bullion worth, however, the world has looked and yet has completely failed to see that the headpiece had originally been prepared for a woman. The gold mask had never been intended for Tutankhamun at all.
Nicholas Reeves
At first I was exceedingly sceptical of the theory that Nefertiti’s tomb was connected to Tutankhamun’s. But Nicholas Reeve’s paper combined with the radar studies is rapidly convincing me.
Very eagerly awaiting the results.
Please remember that Nicholas Reeves paper is titled ‘The Burial of Nefertiti?’
There is a question mark in the title of the article, this question mark shows that this is a theory.
The actual article proposing the location of Nefertiti being in the tomb of Tutankhamun is a good read, which admits that this is a hypothesis and a lot of the information is circumstantial (the information together supporting the suggestion instead of one key piece of evidence). The news sites reporting on this progression are overlooking the fact that this is, first and foremost an inquiry into a hypothesis.
