Hi! I was wondering if you knew how to make gif icons circles or knew of tutorials that could help me out?
Hey buddy! I have two ways of doing it. First, you use a circle shape to make a clipping mask or you add a layer mask to the icon! I’ll show you both below to make this icon!
First you make your gif icon, crop it to 100px or whatever size you want. I have a high resolution computer so I’m going to zoom in on the gif so you can see it better but it’s going to look a pixelated. Don’t worry about it, it’s just so you can see better.
Next you’re going to use the ellipse tool to make a 100x100 circle (or whatever size you want tbh)
It should look like this, perfectly centered so it looks like an actual circle and there’s no part hanging off the edge. Sometimes I make it 98x98 just to be safe.
Drag that guy all the way down to the bottom of your layers
Select all your layers ABOVE the circle (don’t click the circle for this!), right click, and then click create clipping mask (note that if you have a PSD over it like I did, you’re going to want to either take those out of the group and select those layers before you make it a clipping mask, or just add a circle to the bottom of those layers and do the same thing that you’re doing with the gif layers.
Save for web and we have this!
If you like this method, you can jazz up your circle icons with one of these icon psds I put out recently!
Now my preferred method! Aka throw everything into a group and use a layer mask. It’s just way easier and you can switch the layer mask from gif to gif!
So select all the layers
And click the little folder button on the bottom bar (or ctrl+g) and it groups all your layers! Including any PSD or texture you may have.
Create an ellipse the same way you did before, and center it.
This part may seem a little weird at first, but trust me! Hold down your ctrl key and click this little button on the bottom right hand side of the little preview (the thing in red basically) and it will select the shape around the ellipse (give you those dotted lines) and release the ctrl key.
With the little dotted lines running around the circle, you’re going to click on your group with all the layers (in my case, group 2) then click the button for a layer mask (again, in red) And this will hide anything in your group that goes out of the bounds of the circle (or whatever shape you feel like using!) Now just delete the circle layer (or just make it invisible by clicking the eye) and you can see your awesome gif!
Save for web and all that jazz and you have your circle gif!
