'Goon Squad' on HBO: Fantasy Casting Couch [1]

So I'm sure that many of you know that Jennifer Egan's smash hit A VISIT FROM THE GOON SQUAD will be coming to HBO's small screen as a television series at an unspecified date. In honor of this event -- and just because it's fun -- I thought I'd indulge in a little fantasy casting of at least a few of the book's stand out characters.

Here goes:

Sasha Blake -- Amy Adams: Sasha is often described as red-headed and possessing fine, fox-like features. She is also at turns introspective, sharp, dense, and reckless. I think Ms. Adams, mostly as evidenced by her stellar performance in a movie called Junebug, can pull it off.

Benny Salazar -- John Leguizamo: I know he is most known for his career as a funny man, but with the right subtleties (see Joe the King) and music-biz swagger, he'd do brilliantly. He looks great in a fancy shirt (see Scotty's chapter) and can put enough gentle sleaze into Benny's practiced, entertainment exec's demeanor.

Allison Blake -- Chloe Moretz: Okay, so she's the scene-stealing, baby-faced killer kid in Kick-Ass, but she's got a serious side, too. Her delivery on-screen is sharp and she's proven to be more than smart enough to tackle the depth of Allison's character: Her complicated protectiveness of and love for her brother, her fickle relationship with her parents, and the precocious way in which Allison views herself and the world.

[Younger] Lou -- Owen Wilson: I think this works famously. Mr. Wilson has played this character before: Fading surfer's body, lackadaisical attitude toward the true well-being of others, careless father... I admit I'm casting a 'look,' but I think Lou warrants this.

[Older] Lou -- Gary Busey: The guy may be a nut (or so I've heard) but I think he'd be a good compliment to Mr. Wilson and, with some makeup and fake hospital dressings, would do a helluva job as stroke-addled Lou.

[Older] Bosco -- Phillip Seymour Hoffman: I will use any excuse to use this man in anything I fantasy cast. He's a genius. From pedophile in Happiness to legendary writer in Capote to horrible husband and brother in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead -- not to mention misanthropic rock journalist in Almost Famous -- Mr. Hoffman is nothing if not versatile. He's great at explosive diatribes about nutty ideas such as the one Bosco has. He's a genius.

I think that's about it for now. I've not yet finished the book and will likely do a round two when I have.
