an excuse to yap about my girl!! omigosh

liz sherman is such an interesting character

something about her that sticks out to me is her hatred of her superpower, in this universe its pretty rare, but does happen and most people are proud that they’re special

but liz *hates* her power.

shes able to control fire, during the first movie she loses control of her power and lights the mental hospital she lives in on fire, and is shown saying “ I don’t like the term ‘firestarter’… i just dont. and pyrokenisis sounds like some psychosis or something, i dont know. maybe thats right, not being able to let go… its scary”

shes such an interesting character, just going off the movies not much backstory is given for her, all you really get is a short flashback/nightmare scene in which she is being bullied, and accidentally loses control of her power and causes an explosion killing an unnamed number of people

from here her hatred of her power makes sense, she even checked herself into a mental hospital because it helped her feel better.

she says “i dont like it here, but i havent had an episode in months”

and thats such a heartbreaking thing about her, shes so desperate to protect everyone from herself, shes willing to isolate herself from everyone that she cares about

in the first movie she has another episode brought on by one of the main antagonists and burns down the mental asylum, and she is put in a room where she sits still and silent until a character comes to bring her home

even then later she is shown snapping rubber bands at her wrists to distract herself from whatever is going on so she is able to fully control her power

this is such a contrast to the end of the first movie where she fully envelops herself in fire and allows it to flow through her

even more so a contrast to the second movie where she uses her powers to her advantage to help defeat an enemy, and even lights herself on fire in public to defend her partner

its such an interesting portrayal of mental health, and its dealt with surprisingly respectfully for movies made in 2004/2006

in the animated movies she is shown referring to herself as a monster, and in the comics she even touches a homunculus and awakens it in order to rid herself of her powers once and for all

but in a cruel twist of fate her powers are vital in keeping her alive, and without them she is dying in a medical bay until her powers are inevitably returned to her, much to her dismay

its such an interesting take on mental health, even symbolized as a magic power

and her character overall is so very interesting i adore her so much
