Thoughts on tvd3x15 and the salvatore brothers personalities in general...
I can see why they had an originals spin off. The family dynamic is interesting to watch. The sibling bickering works for them and gives them a little more dimension. And it’s interesting when suddenly by comparison, Klaus seem almost normal.
Speaking of Klaus - I love his interaction with Caroline. super cute. But then again who isn’t super cute with Caroline?
And this show wins for making me like and sympathize with both of the leading males in the main love triangle. This is pretty much a first for me because usually these things are very polarizing. Given time, there really isn’t any character who I don’t like on some level. I liked ebil!Stefan, but a return to regular stefan isn’t bad either. I really like that both the brothers have some major flaws, and that they approach loving the same girl in different ways. Normally I’d also be more mad at Elena-type-character for waffling - but because they manage to showcase both the brothers favorably, it’s easier to understand why she might have feelings for both and need to rely on them both. Plus the added dynamic of the brothers relationship really helps keep things complicated. Anyhow. just much love for the whole thing. :D
And one other thing I liked about this whole ebil!stefan arc was that I felt like it gave me a better understanding of their relationship as brothers. And I can see how they are more similar to each other than you might think. They’re definitely driving home the point that although outwardly on first glance, Damon is the “bad boy, not a care in the world type” and Stefan is the “do-gooder hero-wannabe”, they both actually have moments where they cross over. And it’s not as simple as just that. Which is good. Cause simple is boring to watch.
Stefan seems to have a more straightforward personality and Damon deals better with shades of grey. When they were human, they were both naive, but in different ways. One of Stefan’s issues is his inflexibility - it’s what makes it necessary for Katherine to compel him and what causes his cycling between Ripper and Righteous “personalities” He has this idea of himself and what right and wrong, and it’s pretty rigid. But it’s not sustainable and so when he fails, he can’t deal with his own slips. And that causes him to just not care at all and fall into the “dark side” It’s just more magnified because he’s a vampire. This is a personality trait I definitely understand and can relate to. When things get upsetting/tough for him, he chooses either to buckle down harder and do the “right” thing, or alternatively he’s slipped and does the completely self-serving thing.
Damon on the other hand is able to adapt and understands that while there is right and wrong, we’re all fallible and sometimes it’s necessary to adapt - and so you feel guilt, but you do what you have to do to survive. For him, it’s less about the moral right/wrong and more about doing right by the people you’re close to. Generally speaking, he makes his choices based on what he thinks he can live with and what’s good for the people he cares about. He’s a lot more balanced as a person and I think a lot more similar to the average person out there. I think he knows his own flaws - where when things get upsetting/tough for him, he lashes out and does stupid emotional shit. For all that he tries to portray this devil-may-care attitude, he’s actually a lot more influenced by his emotions than Stefan is. And he’s more self-serving in general because he’s definitely aware of his own flaws, but he’s able to accept himself with them and all. So self-serving, but it’s also a lot healthier for his psyche. And a lot better at reading and understanding what makes people tick. When he fucks up he chooses distraction and indulgence and avoids thinking about it. I think if he were a normal human, he’d probably be the type that procrastinates.
Anyhow, just my rambling thoughts on the Salvatore brothers.
