🛵 I Rode a 110cc Scooter to the Himalayas (Everyone Said I’d Fail)
At 17,000 feet, the air is thin, and the wind is freezing. My lungs were gasping for air, and so was my scooter.
On one sharp turn, the engine almost stopped. For a moment, it was completely silent. No wind, no sound, just me alone in the middle of the massive mountains.
I looked at my TVS Jupiter and realized: this journey wasn't about the machine anymore. It was about my own willpower.
Most people told me I was crazy. They said you need a big, expensive motorcycle to reach Ladakh. I completed this ride on a 110cc scooter to prove that you don't need a big engine to have a big adventure.
Since the Atal Tunnel opened, the trip is about 420 to 480 km. I rode from the green forests of Manali into a landscape that looks like the surface of the moon.
The Truth: Even with new roads, about 20–30% of the path is still very rough. There are rocks, mud, and broken paths that are hard for a small scooter to handle.
The Experience: I wasn't racing. I felt the cold air and smelled the woodsmoke from the tea shops. I saw things the fast riders missed.
The Petrol Challenge: There is a 330-350 km stretch between Tandi and Karu with no petrol pumps. Since my scooter has a tiny tank, I had to carry extra cans of petrol and pray it would last.
The Sharp Turns: Riding the Gata Loops (21 very sharp turns) on small wheels was a lesson in focus.
Drink Water: Use ORS (salt packets) in your water. This helps your body handle the high altitude and stops headaches. Let the Engine Rest: At the highest points, like Taglang La, my scooter struggled. I did not panic. I just let it sit for a few minutes while I enjoyed the view.
Layer Up Early: The sun looks bright, but the wind is icy. Put on your warm clothes before the sun goes down, or the cold will hit you hard.
Final Thought: I spent a lot of time waiting for the "perfect" bike. But the mountains don't care what you are riding. They only care that you showed up.
You don’t need a bigger engine. You just need a smaller fear. 🏔️💨
