I Did Nothing

Just like how Noah Stilinski got a huge moment in “Sundowning,” I think that Chris Argent got a very powerful and very insightful moment in “Relics.”  I hope that they keep this trend up, because I’d like to see all the characters get defining moments in the last season.   (Especially Scott, because goddamn it, ‘being sad’ is not a defining character moment.  Tell us why!  Please.)

I know that some people disagree with me about Chris Argent’s character arc, though you know that I believe in it.   (@bigskydreaming I know you respectfully disagree, and I understand your points.  I seriously do.)  But the story he was telling Malia was not only an attempt to make up for what he had done, but contrition -- the acknowledgement that he had done wrong.

To remind you, he was telling Malia of a time where he saw someone go into a blood lust and justify it by using circumstance and other arguments.   We know he was talking about Kate, but he admits he knew she was lying and he damns himself with “I did nothing.”   That’s not blaming the victims.  That’s not blaming Kate or Gerard.  That’s not excusing his actions.  That is contrition.  And then, after admitting he’s done wrong, he’s indicates that he is going to make up for it.  He offers to help Malia with her control issues.   

I know that some people feel that he hasn’t had a satisfactory arc, but to me this was a perfect example of someone expressing the steps necessary to make up for what he did.
