It’s okay, sweetheart. Really, it is. You’re not as alone as you thought. At least, not anymore.
Looking back, I should’ve seen this coming. I woke up that morning with an urge that was too sudden. Of course, Ed didn’t need any convincing. I’m so lucky to have him. We were able to get an appointment with an adoption agency within a couple months.
Being paired with you was pure fate. I believe that it was the work of God. I can’t imagine anyone else in your place, sweetheart.
When we took you home, Ed and I were concerned that Judy would act like most kids do when another child comes into the family. It wasn’t like that at all. Instead of getting jealous and worrying that Ed and I would start paying attention to you more than her, Judy immediately accepted you as part of the family. Frankly, I should start getting jealous of how much time she’s spending with you.
It took three months for me to realize why I had so suddenly wanted to adopt a child. I was on a phone call with a friend, and Ed was supposed to be watching you. He stepped away for a moment to the bathroom. When he returned, you were missing. His searching for you notified me that something was wrong. It took us only two minutes to find you in the artefact room. Ed was the first through the door, and he was quick to grab you. You had been standing right in front of Annabelle’s case.
“What were you thinking?” Ed asked, as terrified as I was.
I wondered, “How did you even get in there?”
“Annabelle had been calling me for a while now,” you began in your small voice. “I didn’t talk back, I promise. I know she’s bad, but she kept getting stronger. She was gonna break out. I had to stop her.”
Ed and I quickly glanced into the artefact room.
“Her door was open, I closed it so she couldn’t get out.”
Alarmed, Ed and I asked, “You touched the case?!”
“No! No. I...you know...”
Suddenly, I understood. I understood a lot of things. “It’s okay, Ed. Call Father Henry and ask him to bless Annabelle’s case again. I’m going to talk to Y/n for a minute. Everything’s going to be fine, Ed, I promise,” I added to resolve the remaining unease in his eyes.
And that brings us here. Sweetheart, I’m sure you’re scared, hearing voices that aren’t supposed to be there, but you’re not alone. I have the same gift as you, sweetheart. I can teach you how to control it all. Then, if you want, you’ll be able to help others just like Ed and I do.
I love you, sweetheart, we all do. You’re safe here. You’re part of this family, and we are going to protect you no matter what.
