can I ask how can someone find out if they r intersex and do u need a dx to id as intersex how do u get docs to do tests if u suspect ur intersex but don’t wanna say that
people find out they’re intersex in all sorts of ways. a small number just know their whole lives. for me, it was the fact that I got to 16 and hadn’t seemed to have started puberty yet — I’d stopped growing, I didn’t have any body hair, and my period hadn’t started. then I was 17 and noticed that I’d developed an adam’s apple and the rest is history.
some people can go their whole lives without knowing though, because there are a lot of intersex variations and they all come with different traits and signs.
if you think you might have a hormonal intersex variation, you could ask your doctor for a blood test to check for hormone levels. they may not want to do that, but it’s well within your rights as a patient to have tests run.
chromosome variations are harder to test under the guise of a different kind of test, so I’m not really sure how you’d go about that.
honestly, I’d say… do a heck ton of research. read about the different variations, the different traits, and read the experiences of different intersex people. from there, it’s easier to narrow down what you may be experiencing and therefore easier to request the tests that you want run.
