Since you haven’t played the genuine M route yet, M is actually constantly reassuring the detective. One of my favorite parts in book 3 is M constantly going “I’m only joking.” “I see what you mean.” and they even say “There is something about this place” referring to Wayhaven if a genuine detective says they love it there instead of M’s standard disdain for people and the town

“There’s something about this place” is really so sweet from M, especially considering how difficult it is for them and experiencing every sound and sensation and how they’d prefer not to be in a crowd of people
