Richonne: The Same Journey

You know each time I wonder: How does she always find the right words that will resonate so loudly in him? I know they love each other but it can’t be just that. I mean Mike and Michonne loved each other and yet Mike gave up. Rick and Lori loved each other and yet Lori never succed to understand Rick. But everything looks so easy between them, there is necessarily something else so that he can stop, listen and try to do what she asks him while his only desire is to run away.

And I remember that they aren’t just lovers, they are also soulmates, I know it's cliche but I really think it’s true, they didn’t just meet the right person in ZA, they met the person whose existence mirrors theirs. And that's what this scene shows us: there is unconditional love, but there is also a deeper connection. This whole scene echoes Michonne's past and Rick's present and we could almost juxtapose their lives, they have the same journey.

First there is this internal battle in Rick, who can not bear to be near something related to his son’s death, but who can not bear to see his wife crying either. And he chooses her, he chooses to hold her hand and wipe her tears, he can’t help but try to console her. And Rick is too overgrown with grief to say a word. So he expresses with his eyes and the delicacy of his fingers, all the love he has for her and Michonne understands. Even if their own wounds are deep, they can’t let the other one suffer without trying to do something, they are there to extinguish a fire, to feed the other or to dry some tears.

But as soon as the letter is mentioned, Rick tries to escape again, to put some space between him and the letter she is holding, between him and his son’s death. He avoids contact and steps back after taken his coat, with a last furtive glance at the letter as if it represented a threat.

And this need of distance brings me back to the prison: Rick avoiding the letter like Michonne avoided Judith. Rick fighting his own anxieties to console Michonne as she did to console Judith.

To act and not to think. Going find food, or going after Negan and put himself in danger ... The exact mirror of Michonne after Andrea's death when she looked alone for the Governor or when she joined Daryl and the others to find food a few minutes after being back at the prison.

The same two souls lost in vengeance and pain, refusing to rest to heal their wounds ...

And now Rick is agited because he knows what Michonne wants from him, but he can’t, it would be accepting Carl's death isn’t it?

And the only time he stops moving and he finally focus is when she tells him that she understands cause she has been there when Andre died. She has moved away to survive but that made her become a monster before being saved by Andrea, because to survive is not to live.

She knows that now and she wants to save him from his grief. And he looks at her in the eyes again because her words echo, Rick finds himself in what she says.

Beyond the fact that she also lost a son, she experienced exactly the same type of grief. And for a few seconds, Andre and Carl are there with their parents. Those survivors who had vowed to protect them and who failed and who, at some point, did not find the strength to cope with their deaths.

And he understands that it's not only for him that she tries here, but also for Carl, because this letter contains his last words, he wrote it when he knew that he was dying. It’s for Carl that Rick has to stop and read this letter because that's what his son wanted: he wanted to talk to his father one last time.

So he stays, because she finds the words and because she's right, he has to try even if it seems impossible .

And he tries, really, we can almost see it again, this internal battle in him, the strength he needs to open this drawer when his mind screams not to do it. Trying to open this damn letter seems to be one of the hardest thing on Earth.

But even his daughter, who is playing in front of him, can not move him away from the emptiness left by his son and the injustice of his death. Michonne is no longer there to restrain him and the pain and the anger reappear, because even if he knows that she is right, that doesn’t mean that he accepts it yet.

So once again, he goes away, to act and not to think.
