"We are going to run away"
As soon as the words left Dwight's lips, he regretted them. Not for the sake of them, of course, but because there was no taking them back. After the way running away had gone for him the first time, it was a terrible idea.
A dangerous idea.
If he tried to do it again and failed, there was no telling what Negan would do to him and if he took you with him, it was surely a death sentence. Your dad would kill him for that, even if you tried to tell him that you took part in it.
...Even if you told him why you'd done it
Really, you could have told him anything and there was a good chance Negan wouldn't listen. Not even his little princess could make a lapse in trust and judgment okay. Dwight would surely die for something like that.
Still, there was just something about you that made the blonde not care.
As stupid as he knew it was to even entertain the idea of taking you and getting as far away from the Sanctuary as possible, you were worth the risk to him.
The dreamy look on your face as you looked at this place, and the people that lived there was more than enough for him to be willing to risk it all. You were beautiful, and he was sure that he would be willing to do anything even if it just made you smile.
It was worth more than anything to him.
You were shocked that he would even say something like that, but it would be a lie to say that it didn't also make you really happy. Even if he wasn't entirely serious, it was something that you often found yourself dreaming about when you were alone.
The idea of getting out and living the life you'd always craved.
"You really mean it? You think that we could do that?" you gasped, now speaking in a much more hushed tone. It was clear that you were thinking over what that could mean, or how it would work.
There were a lot of moving parts and the chances of you being able to actually pull it off were slim to none. There was no way that you could pull it off without anyone finding out and even if you did do it somehow, Negan would surely send everyone he had after you both.
If Dwight thought he'd went all out the first time he'd tried to run away from the sanctuary, there was no comparison to how it would be if you actually went through with this.
You knew your father pretty well, and if he had to, he would send every Savior out after you. Nothing would be too much to get you back home.
It just wasn't something you could risk
You wanted to make it work so bad, and you would have done anything to get out of there but you just didn't want to risk Dwight in order to do it. Even if you had to stay trapped within the walls of the sanctuary, like a prisoner, you knew that D would be safe that way.
As soon as you two left that compound, there was nothing you could do to guarantee that he would be protected from your dad's wrath.
You just weren't sure that the small chance you had at freedom was going to be worth the potential loss that you would sustain if you two got caught. Negan would probably lock you away for the rest of your life if he found out you were even having this conversation.
He would take it as a personal offense, as if you had both rejected him, and that just wasn't going to work.
You both just needed to face the facts.
There was no future for you two in which you just got to happily be together. Even if you wanted to try and make it work within the sanctuary, you could never tell anyone about it or take the chance that they could find out.
You would constantly be hiding away from the rest of the world.
"I'd like to try" he shrugged, reaching out to slowly take your hand in his own, once he'd checked to make sure that none of the other Saviors were around to see you. It was a little bothersome, to have to constantly cover your tracks, but you had to make due.
As much as you hated feeling like a secret, like he was ashamed of you, you understood why it had to be that way. If you wanted to be alive, this was just what you had to do.
"It's too dangerous, we could never do that" you decided finally, just in time to catch a glimpse of Negan headed toward where you both were. Then without even looking back, you stood from your place and headed toward him.
It broke your heart to do that, to switch it up that way when you were so close to getting what you'd always wanted but the danger it would put Dwight in just wasn't worth it to you. You would rather never speak to him again than lose him trying to be selfish.
If something you did got him killed, you were sure you'd never get over it.
That left Dwight in a pretty strange place, confused as to how quickly the conversation had soured, but maybe he'd just hit a nerve. It was stupid for him to even think something like that could work.
"I want to go home now" you announced, your words more than an order than anything else but Negan didn't even give it a second thought. The raid was wrapping up and there was no reason for you to stay, so he got you all set up in Simon's truck and you were on your way.
...And just as you pulled away, you caught sight of Dwight, standing there where you'd left him.
He had no idea how he managed to get himself into this position, but one thing was for sure, this whole thing wasn't over for either of you. Consequences be damned, that couldn't be how this ended.

You didn't see Dwight again until a few days later, as you had been pretty obviously avoiding him but eventually, he got the better of you. The sanctuary was only so big and you couldn't stay away from him forever.
"Hey, is everything okay? I haven't seen you for a while" he started, catching you on your way up the stairway. Right now, it was just the two of you in that space but you knew it wouldn't be that way for very long.
Rather than stop to answer his question, you just kept scaling the stairs, desperately hoping that he would just move on and leave you alone. Though, with the clear feelings you had for one another, it was a longshot.
...And it wasn't like this was easy for you in the first place.
You didn't like having to stay away from Dwight, who was easily your favorite person in this whole compound. It was all just too real for you there in Alexandria, talking about the future that you could share.
The danger, and the potential made for a deadly combination and it would just be easier for everyone if you put a stop to it entirely. You wouldn't lose him to some childish dream, that never should have happened at all.
There was no future for either of you, and you just needed to accept that now.
"Dwight, just stop. We can't do this anymore" you decided finally, hoping that would be enough to discourage him. It wasn't of course, but you had to try. Even if he made a choice to ignore your warnings entirely, you couldn't be a part of it anymore.
You didn't have the luxury of being naïve anymore.
Your actions had consequences and if you had the wrong choices, you would have to face them.
"Just talk to me. I can fix this" he tried, grabbing your wrist gently in his own. It was enough to spin you around to face him, though you yanked your arm free as soon as you met his eyes. This was real life and if he couldn't make the right call, you weren't going to give him an option at all.
It was as simple as that.
"Do you have any idea what could happen to you? That burn will seem like a slap on the wrist if dad catches us here" you reminded, not really willing to find out if your words were the truth.
You'd seen him do much worse for much less.
You could see in the blonde's face that he was trying his hardest to find some way to convince you that wasn't true, but he couldn't. So, before he could make this any worse than it already was, you opened the door to your floor, only stopping briefly before leaving completely.

• Him just sometimes taking his time to let his hands wander over your body to be able to feel all of you as you’re laying in his arms, especially over your bare body after the both of you had sex
• Him actually loving to feel you running your hands through his hair or caressing the back of his neck whenever he lets you hold him for a bit all while your comforting gestures let him too often dive into a deep sleep

The crisp autumn air had a bite to it, a warning of the winter to come. It was the kind of day Dwight preferred for patrols—clear, cool, good visibility. You walked beside him, a quiet, familiar shadow. These patrols had become a strange kind of ritual. He’d point out tracks, signs of other groups, the best ways to move silently through the underbrush. You’d listen, your blue eyes taking everything in, occasionally pointing out something he’d missed: a glint of metal in a ditch, a particular type of edible fungus on a rotting log. It was a peace, fragile and manufactured, but peace nonetheless.
He’d been a Savior, part of Negan’s council, for months now. You’d been living in his room, a constant, gentle presence that both anchored him and reminded him of his failings. He’d grown accustomed to the weight of your head against his shoulder when you grew tired, to the soft sound of your breathing when you slept, to the way you’d hand him a tool before he even asked for it. You were his girl. His responsibility. The one pure thing in this rancid ecosystem of the Sanctuary. The only thing he had left from before, from the group he had before Negan found them, Sherry was Negan's now.. at least you remained his.
The walkers were a small group, maybe five or six, shambling through a derelict orchard. Standard procedure. “You take the two on the left, circle around,” he said, his voice low and even. “I’ll take the right. Quick and quiet.” He’d trained you well. You were competent, efficient. You gave a firm nod, your expression focused, and moved off without a sound.
It went smoothly at first. The dull, wet thunks of his knife finding walker skulls were matched by your own.
He watched your first strike—clean, through the temple—from the corner of his eye, a flicker of that old, paternal pride warming the cold pit of his stomach before he turned to his own task. It was methodical. Brutal. A job. He could hear the wet thunk of your knife finding its mark again. Good. You were okay.
He took down two, you took down two. One left, stumbling towards him, and another you’d missed, coming from behind a gnarled apple tree towards you. “Yours,” he grunted, already moving to finish his.
That’s when it happened.
A thick, moss-covered root, hidden under fallen leaves, snagged the walker’s foot just as it lunged. It didn’t fall gracefully; it fell forward, with a lurching, unexpected speed, directly onto Dwight’s path. He sidestepped, but his boot heel caught on the very same root. A sickening loss of balance. The world tilted. He hit the ground on his back, the air slamming out of his lungs in a pained whoosh. His knife, slick with gore, flew from his hand, skittering across the leaf litter, just out of his frantic grasp.
The walker was on him.
Not biting yet, but falling, a tangle of rotten limbs and gnashing teeth. Dwight’s arms came up, his hands gripping the filthy jacket of the thing, holding its snapping jaw inches from his face. He could smell the decay, see the fragments of something unspeakable between its teeth. He braced his hands and arms against its torso, pushing with all his strength, a sound of effort tearing from his throat. He was strong, but the angle was bad, the leverage all wrong. He was pinned.
He saw you out of the corner of his eye. You’d just finished your walker. You turned, and he saw your face transform. The focused calm vanished, replaced by a raw, animal terror that was for him. It was the look he’d seen glimpses of before—when a Savior had shoved him, when Negan’s laughter had been a little too sharp in his direction. A look that went beyond concern, into a realm of sheer, desperate possession. He still didn't understand how your brain worked, but he had learned to recognize in flashes along the time you've spent together, that him or Sherry (and, previously, Tina) being in danger doused your desperation in gasoline and set it alight into burning flames.
“DWIGHT!”
Burning flames that turned anything else than keeping them alive into ashes, the smoke wouldn't let you remember that you had to survive aswell.
Your scream was a blade through the quiet orchard.
You weren’t supposed to scream.
You never screamed.
But you did.
Then you were moving. Not with tactical precision, but with a reckless, almost suicidal velocity. You didn’t go for your knife. You launched yourself at the struggle.
You grabbed the walker. Not to stab it. You grabbed its jaw. Your pale, slender hands, usually so careful when mending his clothes or cleaning his weapons, clamped onto the upper and lower parts of its rotting mouth, your fingers digging into cold, rubbery flesh, and you pried. You forced its gnashing mouth open, away from him.
“No! Kid, get back! Use your knife!” he shouted, his voice ragged with strain and sudden, icy fear—not for himself, but for you, for the insane vulnerability of your action.
He’d seen this before: that wild, unthinking look in your eyes. It wasn’t bravery; it was a fundamental system failure, an instinct that overrode all sense of self-preservation. It terrified him.
You would have used your knife in any situation, but if you brought your knife down now, the creature’s dying reflex could be a final, convulsive bite. The jaws could snap shut on his throat. You couldn’t risk it. You wouldn’t.
But you weren’t listening. Your mind was gone, overridden by a single, screaming command: NOT HIM. NOT HIM. NOT LIKE THEM.
The walker, frustrated, thrashed in your grip. You didn’t let go. Instead, in a move of shocking, brutal practicality, you wrapped your other arm around its neck, yanking it into a crude headlock. You then did the most terrifying thing Dwight had ever witnessed. You planted your feet, and you threw your entire body backwards, pulling the walker with you, using your own weight as a counterforce to rip it off of him.
It worked.
The sudden release of pressure made Dwight gasp. He was free. The walker was sprawled backwards, now focused on you, the thing attached to its head.
In that split second, as Dwight scrambled for his lost knife, his eyes locked on the scene. The walker, enraged, whipped its head around, jaws gaping wide from where you’d forced them. You were off-balance, falling back. And its mouth, that horrible, final mouth, was now aimed not at his neck, but at the soft flesh of your forearm, which was still hooked around its throat in that desperate headlock.
He found his knife. He lunged.
But time had turned to syrup.
He saw it in horrific, crystalline detail. The yellowed teeth. The dark maw. Descending.
Your arm, in the way.
A sickening, wet puncture. Not a tearing bite, but a precise, deep stab of four canine teeth sinking into the pale skin of your inner forearm, just below your elbow.
At the exact same moment, his knife, driven with all the fury and terror in the world, slammed up through the walker’s jaw and into its brain. It went limp.
Silence.
A horrible, ringing silence, broken only by the ragged symphony of your two breaths.
The walker slid off his blade and crumpled to the ground.
Your arm was free. You stared at it. Four neat, deep punctures, already welling up with the crimson red blood that was supposed to stay inside you. They weren’t ripping wounds. They were injection marks.
The understanding didn’t dawn. It crashed over you both like a wave of arctic water, stopping your hearts, freezing your lungs.
Your eyes, wide and terrified, lifted from the bite to his face. You saw the exact moment his own understanding solidified. The hard, practical light in his eyes shattered. It didn’t just dim; it was extinguished, replaced by a void of pure, unadulterated horror. His face, usually a carefully maintained mask of grim neutrality, collapsed. The color drained from his skin, making the angry red scar tissue stand out in livid relief. His mouth parted slightly, but no sound came out.
A tiny, wounded whimper escaped your lips. Then your breath hitched, a sharp, painful gasp. The frantic energy of the fight evaporated, leaving behind the raw, trembling reality. The tears came then, not with sobs, but silently, welling up and spilling over, tracking clean lines through the dirt on your cheeks. Your body began to shake, a fine, uncontrollable tremor. You looked from the bite to him, back to the bite, your mind refusing to process it, spiraling into a panic of finality. “I… it… Dwight, I’m…”
That’s when he moved.
The despair that had frozen him broke under a more powerful imperative: You.
He didn’t look at the bite again. He couldn’t. He surged forward, his own knife dropping forgotten to the ground. His hands came up, not to examine the wound, but to frame your face. His thumbs, rough and calloused, swept over your cheekbones, smearing the tears and dirt.
“Shhh. Hey. No. Look at me. Look at me.”
His voice was a wreck—low, shattered, vibrating with a grief so immense it was physically nauseating—but it was also impossibly, heartbreakingly gentle. It was the voice he used in your nightmares.
You tried to speak, another whimper breaking through. “It b-bit…”
“I know. I know, baby. I know.” He pulled you into his chest, one hand cradling the back of your head, pressing your face into the rough canvas of his jacket, the other wrapping tightly around your trembling shoulders. He held you so fiercely it was as if he could physically hold your soul inside your body, as if his arms could be a barrier against the virus he knew was already coursing towards your heart. “You’re okay. You’re right here. Just breathe. Follow me, sweetheart. Breathe with me.”
He took an exaggerated, shuddering inhale, willing you to mimic it. His own insides were dissolving, a black hole of agony opening in his chest. She’s dead. She’s dead because of me. She’s dead because she saved me. I was on the ground. I was weak. She’s dead. The thoughts were a poison chant, but he forced them down, locking them away. They had no place here. Not now. Your panic was the only thing that mattered.
“That’s it,” he murmured into your hair, his lips brushing your temple. He could feel the dampness of your tears through his shirt. “Just like that. In and out. You’re so brave. You’re the bravest girl. You saved me.” The endearment was laced with a agony so profound it was a taste of copper in his mouth.
He rocked you slightly, a small, soothing motion. The world, the orchard, the dead walkers, the looming silhouette of the Sanctuary in the distance, simply ceased to exist. There was only this: the weight of you against him, the rapid, birdlike flutter of your heart he could feel through your clothes, the scent of your hair, and the certain, creeping death in the punctures on your arm.
After a few minutes, your frantic trembling began to subside under his steady, desperate comfort, replaced by a heavy, doomed stillness. The panic was receding, not because the threat was gone, but because the finality was settling in. A terrible calm.
He shifted then, finally pulling back just enough to look at your face. His own was a mask of carved grief, his eye red-rimmed and shining with unshed tears he would not allow to fall. Not yet. He couldn’t afford to break. Not until you were safe. Not until you were… gone.
“We’re going home, okay?” he said, his voice thick. “We’re going home to Sherry.”
You nodded, a numb, small movement.
He bent, and with a tenderness that was almost ceremonial, he scooped you up into his arms, bridal-style. You were light, always had been, but now you felt like a burden of utter hopelessness. You didn’t protest. You curled into him, your bitten arm held carefully against your own chest, your face turned into his neck.
He began the long walk back to the Sanctuary, carrying his condemned world in his arms.
As he walked, he talked. A soft, continuous stream of nonsense, of comfort, of lies that were the only kindnesses he had left to give.
“It’s gonna be okay. We’ll get you cleaned up. Sherry’s gonna make a fuss, you know how she is.”
She’s going to scream. She’s going to look at me with hatred.
“You were so fast. Never seen anything like it.”
You were reckless. You threw your life away for mine.
“Just rest. I’ve got you. I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere.”
I’m going to have to go somewhere. I’m going to have to leave you in the dark, alone.
“Remember that patch of blackberries we found last spring? You ate so many your lips were purple for days.”
There will be no more springs. No more blackberries. No more you.
“My brave girl. My good, brave girl.”

With every step, the weight in his arms felt heavier, the future growing darker. The despair inside him wasn’t a wave anymore; it was the ocean, and he was drowning in it, his lungs filling with the bitter salt of impending loss. But his arms never wavered. His voice never rose above that desperate, soothing murmur. He held you close, imprinting the feel of you, the warmth of you, into a memory he knew would soon be all he had left. He carried you, not just across the barren landscape, but through the last precious moments of a world that had, for a little while, contained a field of white flowers and a quiet girl who saw beauty in the ruins. He carried you, already mourning, already a ghost himself, whispering sweet nothings against your hair as his own soul quietly splintered into a thousand unmendable pieces behind the fortress of his scarred face.
