Chapter 19- New Caretaker
Meanwhile, a few people were gathered near Daryl's kitchen window. Two women and a man. It wasn't that they were doing anything strange; they were just gossiping to one another in the privacy of that area. The only problem was who they were gossiping about. One of the women shook her head, her eyes glancing in the direction of Negan's cell before looking back to her group. "I don't know why they put that bastard back in that cell. They should have hung him as Maggie did to Gregory. It's only a matter of time until he gets out again." The second woman stirred around a little where she stood before deciding to respond, "He didn't kill anybody when he escaped. He just ran." "The only reason he didn't kill someone was that he didn't want to get caught. What? Are you eating the bullshit Gabe talked about? That he could change? .. Well, he sure showed Gabriel, huh? Besides, no child murderer is ever going to be a good man." The man snarled, his gaze filled with hatred. It seemed that if he had the chance, he'd kill Negan himself. At least, that's what he told everyone. In reality, he'd be far too afraid to. "I thought he didn't kill kids." The second woman spoke up again, furrowing her brows. She remembered the day Negan entered Alexandria. She was standing nearby when Negan told Raven about his rule against killing women and children. The man scoffed, a scowl enveloping his face, "Doesn't kill kids. Tell that to the kid from the Kingdom. She was only sixteen years old, and she came home torn to shreds in a wooden box. And remember Oceanside? Took a trip over there recently, and they told me that Negan killed all of their men. Anyone ten years old and up. Still think he doesn't kill kids?"
Raven kept making Negan food she heard the conversation she stopped what she doing slowly once she heard what they were talking bout she thinks bout that day Negan told her about the rules about killing women and children she sighed and grabbed a tray after they finished talking she had her knives in her in case she grabs the food putting it on the tray and walks towards the front door she holds the tray with one arm as she opens and closes the door behind her she looks around seeing the gossiping nannies are gone. She walks towards the house with the cell, and she sees the door she needs to go down to open to get to the cell. She opens the door and closes it behind her. She walks down the stairs slowly and sees the cell she was in not too long ago. She gets flashes of memories as she stands there. She is in a daze as she sees flashes of memories.
Negan was lying on the cot, his brown eyes staring at the ceiling above him. He was repeatedly tossing a rubber ball up in the air and catching it again in the same hand, trying to entertain himself so he wouldn't be alone with his thoughts. Every time it was quiet, and he didn't have anything to occupy him, his mind would drift back to the things he had done. The faces of the people he had killed and their mourning friends and family would return in an instant. Luckily, the ball and his books kept him from experiencing it sometimes. When he heard someone open the door, he caught the ball for the last time before turning his gaze to see who the visitor was. At first, he thought it was Gabriel coming to scold him, but when he saw it was Raven, a smile instantly appeared on his lips, before he moved to sit up. Negan set the rubber ball down on the mattress next to him before rising onto his feet and walking up to the bars. "Hey-" He began to speak, but it trailed off as he noticed the look in her eye. Negan's smile slowly faded from his lips, his happiness being traded for concern. "Raven? You okay?" His gravelly voice called out.
Raven blinks and shakes her head, looks into his eyes, and smiles softly. "I'm fine, Negan, sorry, just a flashback from when I was in this cell. I brought you something to eat. I'm going to be your caretaker from now on, but if I'm not taking care of you, Negan, please try not to get under people's skins and just behave, okay? I put in a good word for you, Daryl, to talk to the council. I doubt they will let you out. Especially when I heard something about you, Negan... I thought you never killed kids, Negan? I hear people talking about how you killed a 16-year-old girl. Or what about the men at Oceanside, especially the boys, they're just leaving the women." She says softly as she sets the tray down, sliding it under the cell so he can eat the food she made him. She didn't want to believe what these people said about him. She would believe Negan first, especially with her not trusting anybody but him and Daryl, so she had to hear from Negan what he would say about this incident about this girl being killed.
Negan relaxed a little when she said that she was okay, but he was still worried about her. He wished he could go over, hug her, and offer comfort, but he couldn't. Not behind bars. Negan's smile returned after a moment as she continued talking. "Thank you. Let me guess, opal-eye doesn't like me now or something?" He joked. He didn't mind the change. He couldn't be happier about it. Although he felt guilty knowing she had to take time out of her day to care for him. At her request, he gave a soft scoff of amusement, looking to the ground for a brief moment before coming back to her. "I'll try. Can't make any promises, but I'll try. And Daryl is talking to the council? The guy hates my guts." Negan reached down to take the tray as she slid it over, but froze in place as he heard what she said last. His eyes grew distant for a moment, a brief flash of the dead girl resurfacing in his mind. His cheerful expression had melted into pain and grief in an instant. Negan released a sigh, taking a seat on the floor in front of the tray. The cold of the concrete stung his skin through his clothes at first, but he relaxed once again soon after.
He lifted his head to look up at her, his eyes meeting hers. "I don't. I never have and I never will. Someone else killed her, and I got the blame. When The Sanctuary was just starting up, we met a group. Some refugees from Hollowbrant Outreach. We had them work for us. They go out and get supplies, and we take fifty percent of their shit. The usual. When they started getting antsy, I made the mistake of letting Simon handle it. He told me he saw red. He ordered all of their men to be killed. Ten and up. They ripped kids from people's arms and shot them dead in front of their families. I had no idea. When they got back, I made sure that everyone knew that shit like that was never gonna happen again. I didn't want my people to kill defenseless kids. But one man didn't get the message. We called him the Croat. Extremely loyal, but even more psychotic. We came across a kid just a couple of miles away from the Sanctuary. We thought she was just a drifter. Nothing to do with us or anything we were doing. So I gave a direct order, let her walk. The Croat.. He saw it differently. Thought she had beans to spill, and he was right. She was a scout from the Kingdom. At least, that's what she copped up to before. Before he, uh.." His eyes lowered a little, his expression full of grief. He hated what happened to the poor girl. She didn't deserve it. Negan wished that the Croat had just listened to him, regardless of whether she was a scout or not. "She was just a kid. She probably wasn't a scout in the first place. Maybe she was just trying to tell him what he wanted to hear so he would let her go. After that, I knew that he was a rabid dog that needed to be put down, but I missed it. He ran off like the damn coward that he was, but maybe karma caught up to him."
Raven stood there listening to him. She looked down at the ground, shook her head, and sighed, "I get you missed when Croat escaped, but why the hell would you keep Simon alive that whole time after what he's done? But look, I'm glad I got your side of it. And yes Daryl hates you but he knows we are together and he does anything for me he sees you make me happy and that we love each other but he will kill you if you hurt me but I know you wouldn't hurt me because I told Daryl it was your idea on coming back after you went to the Sanctuary he also knows that you are changing and you regret everything you have done. And I told him you will behave and not tease anyone who comes down here to take care of you. Daryl is allowing me to take care of you, but he would tell anyone that we are together. Don't worry bout me taking my time to take care of you. I offered to take care of you, and I want this to be the only way we can spend time together and see each other." She says as she sits on the floor in front of the cell.
"I ask myself the same damn question a lot. I should have put him down." He spoke before releasing a sigh to follow. He had made a lot of decisions he regretted. His time in this cell only made him realize just how many he had made, and they haunted him constantly. Negan gave a nod of acknowledgment as he listened to her speak about Daryl, before grinning a little with amusement when she told him of Daryl's threat. He would never pose any harm to her. He just found it funny that he had been right. Of course, he'd expect no less from her big brother. Although he was a little surprised that Daryl seemed to be so calm about their relationship. Even if Raven told him that Negan was changing his ways, he wasn't too sure that Daryl would believe her. He sat in silence as he thought for a moment before eventually speaking up. "So, he's trying to help, but only because you want him to, not because he likes me. Still, see that as a win. I am trying to be better. I admit, I don't think I've gotten far, but I am trying. And if you're sure, then alright, but if it ever gets to be too much, then see if you can get the Cyclops- I mean, Gabriel, to help." He spoke.
Raven looks at him and rolls her eyes and shakes her head at his comment "Look I know you're trying and you're being yourself like always but Daryl knows something I told him we need all the help we can get but I don't need you to worry bout me Negan but like I said we need all the help we can get with this group I mentioned to Daryl I didn't say anything before because I didn't think they come back or if they were still out there. But you should know there is a group out there that uses walker hordes to get around. They use Walker skin as a mask, and I've seen them, and it's a lot like Negan." She says as she starts explaining to Negan what she told Daryl
Negan's brows raised as he heard her talk about the group; his eyes were full of concern. Whoever these people were that she spoke of, they didn't sound like a group to be messed with. Not if they wanted to keep their heads. After a moment of letting the information sink in, Negan spoke up. "And here I thought I messed up shit. Wearing dead people's faces? That's a whole new level of psychopath. Sounds like someone watched Chainsaw Massacre one too many times, but if it gets the job done, I get it." He shrugged before looking over to her, his brown eyes meeting her blue. "Are you sure they're gonna let me help? I mean, I'd like nothing more than to put a few Leatherface-wannabes in their place, but I doubt the old knights of the round table are gonna let me," He gestured to his left, where the meeting room was. It was practically right outside his window, just on the other side of the street. On a good day, he could hear every single thing they said there. It was another form of entertainment for him. The only problem was that every single time, he had to hear someone suggest killing him. Soon after he gestured, he began to speak again, "If they do let me help, I bet I'll be the bait."
Raven shrugs her shoulder and sighs "I don't know Negan but Daryl knows that if they let you out to help everyone in all the communities want to kill you and I told Daryl I will do anything to protect you even if that means protecting you with my life and I mean Negan I would jump in front of you to protect you no matter what it takes but if they do let you help they will keep a close eye on you to make sure you don't betray them. But it's up to you how you act and what you do from here on out. You got it?" She questions him as she looks him in his eyes, dead serious. She doesn't want him to die or anyone to try to kill him, but she will kill or hurt someone if they try anything with him.
Negan took on a concerned look again when she mentioned sacrificing herself. He didn't like the idea of her risking her life to save his own. "If shit hits the fan, I'll handle it, okay? I don't want you to die because of me. I wouldn't be able to live with that. I could barely take losing one woman I loved. I couldn't take losing another." He spoke, a pleading look in his eyes. Deep down, Negan knew what he said probably wouldn't stop her, but he decided to speak his piece anyway. If she ever died saving him, there's be two possible outcomes from it. Both horrible. Either he would die trying to get revenge, or he'd kill the person and eventually become an even worse villain than he was before. If losing the woman he loved affected him so badly the first time, one could only imagine how it would affect him the second time. Negan was pulled away from his thoughts as he listened to the rest of what she said. He still had high doubts they'd let him go, but she still seemed to have hope. When she asked him the question, he sat in silence for a little while before releasing a sigh. Negan nodded his head. "I know. And I'm not gonna betray anybody. I know a man's word is worthless nowadays, but I'm not gonna do anything to these people. Not unless they give me a reason to." He promised her, his tone sincere.
Outside the window, small footsteps could be heard trying to sneak over. Whoever it was wanted to listen in on the conversation that was taking place. Negan didn't seem all too worried, though. He recognized those footsteps from anywhere. "If you're gonna sneak up on someone, Miss Grimes, it's the blade of your foot and then roll inwards. Not heel to toe. It's too loud. I could hear you from a mile away." Negan spoke up, momentarily breaking his gaze from Raven to glance at the window. A soft sigh could be heard outside before all fell silent. "I know you're still out there," Negan spoke again, his tone playful but firm. "Fine, I'm going," Judith spoke, exasperation in her tone. Although reluctant, she began to walk away, leaving them to their conversation. "If we're gonna keep talking about this, we might wanna be quieter in case the little lady hears. Unless you don't mind. I usually tell the kid everything anyway." He spoke with a small smile on his face at the thought of Judith. He liked her. She reminded him a lot of Carl sometimes.
Raven looks into his eyes, smiles softly, and nods, "Good, I don't want to lose you again, Negan. I have you in life again, it may not be the way we want it, but you're safer in here than out there, and I'm willing to make sure nothing happens to either of us. Even Daryl would make sure I didn't do anything stupid, but I even told myself to sacrifice myself for him, too. I love you, Negan, with all of my soul. I know you would hate it if something bad happened to me, but you know I can handle myself." She says as she grabs the bars of the cell and looks at him with her icy blue eyes. Raven hears the footsteps, too. She glances at the window. "That's Judith, oh wow, look how she grew. The last time I saw her, she was still a toddler. She likes you, Negan. I can tell she doesn't seem like a monster like everyone else does, but I don't mind. Daryl doesn't like the idea of her talking to you or helping her with her math homework; he even questions how a gym teacher would know math, but I told him that you are smart and you just want to help..." she says
Negan smiled a little more, gently placing his hand atop hers as she held the bars. The skin on his palms was rough and scratchy from the calluses he earned from using the baseball bat for so long. "I love you, too. I always will. I don't want to lose you either, and I will do anything I can to keep it from happening." When she spoke of Judith, he couldn't help but chuckle a little. "Yeah, she's a good kid. She's a lot like her brother. She told me the reason she likes me is that I'm the only one who doesn't treat her like a kid. I treat her like an equal, like a friend, and I'm willing to be honest with her." He spoke, still smiling. Negan was so proud and protective of the kid, even though she wasn't even remotely his. Negan scoffed when he heard about Daryl's opinion. "Of course, he doesn't like it. He doesn't like anything I do. I mean, I got it before, but now? I could save the damn world, and he'd still give me that stink eye of his." He joked a bit. He was silent for a few moments before he spoke again. "But yeah, Judith has grown a lot. Give it a few years, and she'll be as big as Carl. Wait, they let you see her when she was a toddler?" He asked, tilting his head a bit out of curiosity. He had forgotten that he had passed by the cell window when he was holding the tiny Judith in his arms.
Raven looks at him, holding his hand, and shakes her head, "No, Negan, I saw you holding her through the cell window. I couldn't stop smiling. See how happy you were just to hold her. I know how great kids are, I just never saw it before. I know you have always wanted kids. I know you were trying with Lucille until she got sick. I'm sorry, Negan, just seeing you holding the baby made me think how it would've been if you did have kids with Lucille. But in my opinion, I don't think it is smart to have kids in this world. Carl told me what he had to do for his mom when she gave birth to Judith. The risks it would take are either the baby doesn't survive childbirth, or even this world or the mother and the baby die during childbirth. I thought I had kids for a short time when I was younger, but I know how mentally unable I am. I wouldn't be able to take care of myself, let alone a baby." She says as she sighs, looking down and leaning her head against the bars. If she had kids, she would be a better mom than her mother and father combined. I wouldn't let my child suffer like she suffered, no matter what. She hasn't even had sex in a long time. She technically never had proper sex; it was always forced upon her, and she never enjoyed it, so she wouldn't know how to properly have sex or know what it's supposed to be when she's in a loving relationship, not an abusive one.
Negan laughed a little, a smile on his face. "Oh. Yeah, she was the sweetest baby I had ever seen. She was like a little cherub sitting in that room. I couldn't help it, I had to hold her. The kid had never even seen me before, and she snuggled right up to me and fell asleep in my arms. Talk about baby fever. I almost took her back with me to the Sanctuary." He joked at the last bit. Even though he said it playfully, he meant every word. If he hadn't had his morals, then he would have taken her back home to raise as his daughter. When Raven spoke of the dangers of having a kid, Negan's smile faded away. He knew the risks, and it worried him a lot, but he couldn't help it. He always wanted to have a kid, and he still did, but if it never happened, then he'd just have to be fine with that. Negan's brows furrowed ever so slightly as he heard what she said. "Raven, stop selling yourself short. You'd be a wonderful mother. I can only imagine how spoiled and loved that kid would be with how sweet you are. But if you don't want kids, it's okay. I understand." He spoke softly, a reassuring smile appearing on his lips. Negan reached his free hand through the bars, gently running his fingers through her hair.
Raven looks into his eyes, blushing that he would want to have a kid with her. "Wait, you would want to have a kid with me? I mean, I never really thought of a future like that, but that sounds nice if we didn't deal with a world like this. But I just want to have it where you're not in a cell, and we are safe and not worried about being in danger anymore. I know with walkers, there is always danger, but I'm talking about dangerous groups. And you would be an amazing father. You wouldn't let our kid be in danger for any reason. I just want a normal life like before the apocalypse, but we probably wouldn't ever get that." She says as she leans her head towards his hand, puts her hand on top of his hand, and looks into his eyes.
Negan's eyes widened, caught a little off guard by the question. That is exactly what he meant, but it was still a bit embarrassing to be called out on. He chuckled a little, looking down as a smile appeared on his lips, before putting his eyes on her again. "Well, since you asked the question, yeah. Yeah, I would. Again, it's fine if you don't want kids." He didn't want her to feel like she had to. Even though it was a dream of his, he wouldn't ever try to force it on her. She deserved to have that choice. He nodded a little as he listened to her speak. "Hey, I want out of here, too, but Michonne hates me. I have tried to talk to her and connect with her, but it only makes matters worse. And yeah, there's that too, but hey, these communities survived my army. I'm sure they can kill some walker-wannabes." Upon the compliment, he couldn't help but smile. He hoped that if he ever could become a dad, he'd be a good one. However, after all the things Negan had done, he was a little worried that he might teach the kid wrong. "Thank you. I'd do my best to be a good dad. And that kid would never get out of my sight. I'd be right there, constantly watching over them like a hawk. I want a normal life too. Hell, I'd love to be a gym teacher again, or just work with kids in general." He continued to gently play with her hair as he spoke, before smiling softly as she placed her hand upon his.
Raven looks into his eyes and smiles, "You know I would love to have kids, but this world is so fucked. I mean, I'm surprised that Judith is alive and healthy and happy, but for other kids, I've seen it's not good, but knowing us, we will teach our kids how to survive and defend themselves against anything. But I do have to say I don't think it will be anytime soon that we will have kids Negan, especially with the fact that it's kind of embarrassing I don't want to tell you.... and it's hard for me to explain or talk bout but we are together and I don't want to hide anything from you or anything because you did tell me about your wives and that you had needs and well I haven't had anybody to fulfill my needs even though everything I know about sex is basically being forced to do it no love it and anytime I was forced to do anything sexually I just went numb and just let it happen." She says as she looks into his eyes, dead serious and not wanting to be funny right now. Negan smiled when she said she'd want kids. Maybe he'd get to be a dad, after all. When he heard her say 'but,' his smile wavered a little. It looked like he had gotten his hopes up too soon. He should have known there was gonna be a condition or some kind of wake-up call. He knew it was by some miracle that Judith was still around and alive. Not to mention, actively thriving in this world. She was quickly proving to be a really strong kid. That's why he liked her. She gave him hope. However, his smile returned to its former glory as he listened to the rest of what she said. "That'd be the meanest little fighter anyone could come across." He smirked before glancing around at the cell after what she said next. "And yeah, I think I caught that." He joked, thinking she meant because he was locked away. However, after he saw her expression, he quickly became serious, aware that the conversation's mood was about to shift. He sat in silence as he listened, frowning as he was reminded of what she had been through. "I'm so sorry. You shouldn't have had to go through that. No one should. There was a rapist in the Sanctuary. One of the only kills I don't regret at all."
Raven looks into his eyes and sighs, "I'm just glad I killed my parents when all this started. I just wish I were able to kill my ex-boyfriend and my father's friends who used me as well, but I have to deal with what I could do at the time. I'm just glad you don't tolerate that at all. If I were in your position, I would've tortured the rapist right in front of everyone, well, not the children, of course, but you know what I mean. By the way, I'm going to be living with Daryl, so a few doors down from the cell." She says
Negan met her gaze, beginning to gently play with her hair again in an attempt to offer her comfort. "Well, I'm sure those assholes got what they deserved. Probably torn to ribbons by the dead. Maybe even got their nuts chopped off by one, who knows? .. Damn, I would have paid anything to have seen that shit. You know, that's what I should have done to David. Instead of stabbing him in the neck, I should have taken him to the fence for a little meet-and-greet." Negan couldn't help but crack a smile at his joke, but it quickly faded as he remembered how serious their conversation was earlier. He wasn't trying to make fun of her in any way; he was just trying to lighten the mood. After what she said about Daryl, he nodded a little. "Well, that's good. Are they not going to let you have the house above me, or do you not know?" He asked.
Raven looks at him and shakes her head as she slightly giggles, "I don't know yet. I suggested it to Daryl while we were talking, but he said I can stay with him until he knows what the council will say. I don't even know who is on the council. I know Daryl is, but I'm assuming it's a lot of people. I just hope they are okay with me doing this and living in Alexander. I told Daryl I'm willing to help anyway I can, especially by going out and looking for supplies. I even told Daryl that he and I could go on a motorcycle ride like when we were kids. But believe me, Negan, if I could, I would take you with us on the motorcycle ride. I know how much you loved your motorcycle before all this happened." She leans closer to the cell bars.
Negan smiled when she laughed a little at his joke. He was relieved knowing he had brought her amusement, even if it was small. Negan nodded at what she said. Even if things turned out so that she didn't get the house she wanted originally, at least she still had a roof above her head. "There's Gabriel, Laura, Daryl, Michonne, Aaron, Nora, and Kyle. I think that the doctor is there too. Siddiq, I'm pretty sure." He spoke. He had been listening in on their meetings for so long that he had learned all of them by name. "With that little show we did, I'm sure they're fine with you staying in here. Well, actually, after that shit with Michonne's friend, it's hard to say, but I still think that earned you some brownie points." When she spoke of the motorcycle, his smile grew before he chuckled. "Oh, I'm sure Daryl would love to drag me along. All I'd need to do is wrap some chain around my ankles and hand him the other end." He joked, before his tone became a little more serious, "I still miss that bike. I used to drive that thing everywhere."
Raven shakes her head as she slightly giggles and playfully pushes him through the bar with his joke. She smiles, holds his hand, and kisses his hand. "I know you miss your bike. Maybe when you get out of here, we can share a bike, or I can find you one. I asked Daryl if he could teach me how to fix up a car or motorcycle. I always wanted to learn that it's one of the best skills you can have in the apocalypse. I just think people here wouldn't like me because at some point they knew who I was when they saw me when I was here with you, or as a prisoner, so they might not like who I am or that I was associated with you." She says
Negan smirked upon the shove, sitting upright again soon after. When she kissed him on the hand, his smirk shifted into a smile. Negan loved her so much. He didn't know why he had waited to date her. "I'll be fine with sharing. I don't want you to fret your pretty little head trying to find me something out there. I know how hard that shit is. Most of my men had to carpool because of how damn difficult it was to find working cars. Who knows? Maybe you'll be the best damn mechanic that these communities have ever seen, and I'm sure you'll be fine. You brought me back. I don't think they'll see you as being associated with me after that tackle. Damn, you should have played football or joined a wrestling team in high school. You'd have knocked everyone on their ass." He joked, rubbing his lower back a little bit with his free arm. It didn't hurt too much, but it was a little sore. It wasn't anything he couldn't handle.
Raven giggles and shakes her head. "I'm sorry, Negan, I didn't mean to hurt you that badly. I mean, you are getting old, so... and I told you, Negan, I learned martial arts, like how to use weapons, hand-to-hand combat, and defend myself. So yeah, I know how to tackle it, but that is not going to stop them from getting suspicious of us. Just be glad that someone from Rick's group isn't here to kill you. I mean, I gave her the name Maggie at one point, but she's not here." She says as she looks into his eyes and watches him, how much in love she is with this man that she can finally call hers. With him being in that cell, it is a bump in their relationship, but she's not going to let anything come between them or stop them from being together.
"It's fine, I've had worse." When she called him old, his jaw dropped, putting a hand on his chest as if he had taken offense. "Well, Miss Rose, hit a man where it hurts, why don't you?" He joked, a smirk on his face. It didn't offend him; he was just joking around. Afterward, he took his hand back off his chest, letting it rest on his knee instead. He nodded at what she said, sighing. "Got a point there. And yeah, Maggie was going to. She came down here with a crowbar, only a month after I had been in here. But she decided not to because I 'was worse than dead already' and she made me go back to the cell." He spoke, meeting her gaze.
Raven looks at him, frowning, and looks at him in shock. "What?! And you didn't bother to tell me this? Why would she do that if the woman was pregnant with the man you killed?" She questions him; she didn't realize he could've been dead a month after he was in here; he would've been buried or a walker if Maggie had to kill or hurt him. She may not know the woman but she has lost her fucking shit if she would end up killing him after Rick let him live for Carl for all of us to live together and work together to survive not kill each other she was worried bout Negan now because anybody could kill him at any moment and if she wasn't around and she sees or finds him dead her heart would shatter.
Negan's smile faded as her expression changed. Of course, he couldn't exactly expect her to stay cheerful after that news. "Well, I just now got the opportunity to bring it up in a conversation. I wasn't gonna just blurt it out randomly without context. And yeah, she's the same woman. Came marching down here all red in the face and clutching that thing like it was the answer to all her problems. Michonne stopped her at the door at first, but then let her go straight in. She told me to get on my knees. And I did. This was before Gabe started coming down here to talk. I was all alone. Nothing to occupy me. Just me and my thoughts, and I just wanted out of this thing. I even tried starving myself to death at one point, but I gave up. Dead or alive, I needed out, but... Then she wouldn't. She kept wanting me to come into the light, but I didn't. I stayed there. Then she opened the door, and I thought maybe she'd bash my brains out, but nope. She dragged me out and tossed me into the wall like I was a damn rag doll. She took one look at me and decided I wasn't worth it. I begged her to, I was pleading as much as I could, but she made me go back in. Haven't seen her since..." He explained. Now, he wouldn't dream of letting something like that happen again. He'd do anything he could to stay alive. Back then, he was in love but felt like he couldn't have her. He was constantly hearing people curse his name and plead for his demise. He knew he'd never get to experience a moment outside of his cell, and he was all alone. It was just too much for him to handle at the time.
Raven looks at him in shock, and then she starts to get pissed about what Maggie did to him. She stands up and paces in front of the cell and bites her nails as she tries to calm down. "You almost died, Negan, and you... You wanted to die, why? Just so you can be rid of this life with the mistakes you have made and see Lucille again? But what about me? Did you ever think of me when you wanted to die? I'm upset with you, and I'm very pissed about Maggie almost killing you. I get it that she wanted to kill you because you killed her husband. I would do the same thing if someone killed you in front of me. But if I have to worry bout her trying to kill you at any point, I wouldn't hesitate to kill a bitch!" She yells and stops in place, standing there pissed.
Negan watched as she stood up, his lips curling into a frown. His brown eyes trailed down to look at the ground as she began to question him, a sigh escaping his lips before he eventually looked up at her again. "I did think about you. That's one of the reasons I wanted to, because I thought I couldn't be with you. I thought I was gonna grow old and rot down here by myself or go insane. I had already started seeing shit. And even though she tried to kill me, I don't want you going after her. She's got a kid now, and that kid's gonna need their mom. Besides, it was a long time ago. I haven't had any problems since."
Raven looks down and rubs her face with her hands. "Negan, I wouldn't have known you were dead. I wouldn't have known until I came back here. Even if she did have a kid, by the sound of it, she has lost her shit and is mentally unstable to be a mother. It's hard for me not to want to at least hurt her. I wouldn't kill her unless I gave in. But it breaks my heart that you could've been dead, and I would have never seen you again." She says softly, tearing up
"I realize that now, and I'm not going to do that shit anymore, okay? I don't want to die. Especially not now. And I doubt she's okay up there. From what I heard, Maggie lost her dad, her sisters, and then her husband. Also heard there was an assassination attempt on her. They knocked the stroller over and nearly killed the kid, too. So, all that rage was about to be unleashed on me that day, but she decided against it. She showed me mercy. The most I got out of it was a few bruises and scrapes, so it's fine. You may not think so, but let's just leave her be. She tries that shit again, then do whatever the hell you want, but I don't think she will." He spoke, his eyes looking up at her. He knew that she didn't want to lose him. He didn't want to lose her either. That was part of the reason he was begging her to let it go. Maggie was a good fighter, and Negan knew she would fight furiously to protect herself and her child. "Raven, I love you. I'm not going to let myself die, and I'm not going to let you do something crazy."
Raven looks up at him slowly with tears in her eyes and tears slowly falling down her cheeks. She can't stop her anger or frustration. She closes her eyes and looks down, putting her hands on her hips. "I love you too, Negan, but I'm not going to lose the one person that makes me want to keep going in this fucked up world... yes, I have Daryl but... I just don't want to lose the only two people who gave a shit about me. As I said before, Negan, I do anything for you, and that means protecting you from killers. I can tell by everyone who knows who you are and what you did wants to kill you, they're just fucking scared and cowardly to do so. I have killed a lot of people who have done me wrong. But..... fine, I'll not do anything crazy." She says softly
Negan rose onto his feet, grabbing onto the cell bars to help him stand. He was starting to feel the exhaustion from his journey to the Sanctuary, and his legs beneath him were beginning to ache. It had been a long walk to get there, and where he wasn't used to the exercise from being cooped up for so long, he was starting to feel the burn in his muscles. However, Negan ignored the pain, wanting to stand with her. "Good. Besides, I want the pretty little head of yours in one piece. It's easier to kiss that way." He teased a little, a small grin forming on his lips.
Raven looks at him and smiles softly. "You're cute, but with this head, it ain't pretty in here." She says as she points to her temple, "I should probably get going so you can rest. You look like shit, and I'm sure that walk you dealt with made you exhausted. I will let you know what the council says as soon as I know." She says, walking up to the cell and leaning against the bar, looking up at him, putting her hand on the bar, and smiling softly. She wishes she could be in the same bed as Negan to sleep. She knows it must be hard to sleep in this cell.
Negan's lips curled into a smirk, laughing at what she said. He knew he probably didn't look his best after his journey. He probably looked disheveled. "Here I am pouring my heart out to you and giving you compliments, and then you turn around and say that. Ouch, Raven. Ouch." He joked, laughing a little more for a few moments before he grew sincere as he prepared to speak again, "I had to walk for hours to get to the sanctuary. If that wasn't bad enough, I was almost a chew toy for a pack of wild dogs. They ended up being the chew toy in the end, though. To save myself, I let a walker in and shut the door behind me. I felt bad for trapping those dogs in there with that thing, but one was a cane corso. There was no way in hell I was getting out in one piece without a little help from the dead... Their little meeting should be over soon. They usually don't take too long. If they do let you get this house, who knows? Maybe you can sneak me upstairs sometimes." He spoke. He was joking in the last sentence. Even though he wished he could move around outside of his cell and stretch his legs, he didn't want to get her in trouble.
Raven looks at him giggling and nods "Yeah I hate that dogs are wild now and with the meeting I don't know what they will decide Negan I know you're joking but I wish I could do that but they aren't going to give me a key immediately or ever but I just know what whatever they decide is it's worth it to me. I wish I could help you take a shower and help you sleep, too, because that bed doesn't look comfortable to me." She says as she looks at him through the bar, she glances over at the window towards the meeting house.
Negan looked behind him towards the bed when it was mentioned, a sigh escaping his lips. It was about as comfortable as sleeping on a piece of cardboard, but he wasn't going to ask for a better mattress. Besides, he doubted that they'd give him a new one or even entertain the idea. Negan turned his attention back to her. "I think the concrete is probably comfier than that thing. I can feel the springs stabbing me in the damn kidneys every time I lie down, but that's just what I got to live with now. Besides, I'm not worried about my sleep. What about yours?. The nightmares and all that crap." Negan spoke, concerned in his eyes. He wanted to be able to console her and help, but he couldn't. It hurt knowing that he couldn't do anything for her, even though he wanted to.
Raven looks at him and sighs and shrugs "I still have them Negan even when I was at the Sanctuary but me either wearing or cuddling your jacket kind of helped I mean it's not the real thing unless I have you there but don't worry bout me Negan I dealt with them for a long time I'm used to them by now it may not seem like it but I have adapted to them. I wish that you were holding it at night, but I'm going to have to make do with just your jacket for now; it smells like you, and it's comforting. I... I should get going. I love you, Negan. I'll see you in the morning as well as best as you can." She says softly that she hopes that she won't have nightmares tonight, but she knows that's not going to happen. She wishes they would just go away or not have any dreams at all.
Negan frowned at the news. He figured that she still experienced nightmares, and he wished so badly that he could help her with them. But it wasn't like he could crawl out of the cell to comfort her, despite how much he wished he could. When Raven spoke of smelling his scent, his brows raised, a small smirk appearing upon his lips. He was a little shocked by the revelation, but he was amused nonetheless. "My smell? Well, now I know you're obsessed with me. Back then, I was just joking. I didn't mean for you to have taken it as a challenge." He teased, his smirk growing slightly more. "But I love you too, Rosie, and the same goes for you."
Raven puts her hands on her hips, shakes her head, puts her hand through the cell, grabs his shirt, slowly pulls him to her, and kisses him through the cell. "I have to go. I love you and sleep well." She says as she pulls away and grabs the tray that was slid under the door since he was done with his food. "I will see you in the morning." She says as she carries the tray upstairs, opens the door, and walks out of the cell room to the outside.
Negan's eyes looked at her hand before lifting to gaze at her face once more as he was pulled closer to her. He pressed his lips against hers in return, before moving away again as she began to step away. "I love you too. Sleep well. Well, as best as you can." He spoke. His amusement had melted away, replaced by the concern that was glimmering in his eyes. He knew that she had dealt with nightmares for a long time, but that didn't stop him from worrying about her. Sleep was important. Not only were the nightmares probably damaging her physically, but possibly damaging her mentally. Negan watched as she walked away, a sigh escaping his lips. "Alright. I'll be waiting, my liquor-fairy." He called to her, a small smile appearing on his lips as he spoke. Despite the time that had passed, he still remembered the name he had called her that night, and he planned on using it again in the future.
Meanwhile, Daryl was standing outside his house, his back pressed up against his front door. His arms were folded across his chest, tapping his fingers upon his arm as he awaited Raven's arrival. Although his exterior was emotionless, internally, he was anxious to tell her the results of their meeting. The council had ruled in their favor on most things, but of course, they didn't agree with everything they proposed.
Raven stands there with her back against the door to the cell room. She walks up the stairs and walks towards Daryl's house. She sees him standing there outside his house. "Hey Daryl, how did the meeting go?" She asks if she isn't going to be shocked by what they have discussed, but she openly knows what Negan did to everyone here; she is still with Negan, and she loves him. He's changing, and he has regrets about doing what he did. She looks up at Daryl, smiling softly as she holds the tray with an empty plate from Negan's food.
Daryl's eyes trailed over to her as he watched her walk up the stairs before he pushed himself off the wall and stood upright as she got closer. "They've agreed on letting you stay in Alexandria in the house above him or with me. From what they said, your friend likes to move around at night. So, if you can't sleep, you can stay with me instead. They're also discussing giving you a key to his cell, but that's a no for now. At least, not until they know they can trust you. They also said no to his help. They said it's too much of a risk right now. But, they are thinking about it." He relayed to her. Daryl felt bad that he couldn't help her let Negan out, but he was also a little relieved. Daryl wasn't impressed by Negan's behavior change yet. He wanted to see more proof before he thought Negan was deserving of freedom. Regardless, he still would speak for Raven in the council.
Raven looks at him in shock and smiles widely. "Oh my god, wow? That's great news. I will um go get things, but if I do need you, Daryl, I know where you are. I do appreciate what you are doing for me. You are slowly but surely building our relationship back up. You know I would do anything to help this community, and you, living above Negan's cell, will make it easier for me to take care of him. I also want to see how it feels to live on my own in my own house. I know you and the council did whatever you thought was right, but trust me, Daryl, he's changing. I can see it.
Daryl's lips moved into a small smile before nodding at what she said. "Yep. It's all yours, and alright." Daryl was more than happy to help if she were ever to ask for it. Whether that was helping her with food, supplies, or whatever. He was relieved to hear what she said regarding their relationship. Even if it was being rebuilt slowly, it was still good to know that it was being mended after all this time. Even if it was just little by little. As she spoke of her allegiance to Alexandria, he gave another nod, "I know you would. We're lucky to have you with us... And if he is changing, he hasn't shown us yet. He acts the same around us." Daryl spoke. He trusted her word, but he still wanted to see the results for himself. Although, despite his uncertainty, he'd still be her voice in their meetings.
Raven smiled softly and nodded as she looked at the door, opened it, and went inside. She went to grab her stuff and her weapons. She looked at him and smiled. She was happy to have him back in her life, even after what happened between them, but she still wants to make amends. She is surprised he doesn't hate her for being with Negan. "Well, I guess I should go home and settle in." She says, giggling softly.
Daryl smiled in return. He was honestly a little surprised that the Council allowed her to stay in Alexandria. Especially after the incident with Jocelyn a few months ago, but he couldn't be happier about their decision. Now he could rest easy, knowing his little sister was safe and sound behind their walls. Not to mention, he could spend more time with her now. Of course, she was dating the man that Daryl despised, but that didn't mean his animosity extended to her as well. He hated Negan and him alone. Daryl was pulled out of his thoughts as she spoke, before giving a nod. "Alright. If you need help with anything, you know where to find me." He replied, a smile appearing on his face as she laughed.
Raven smiles as she grabs her stuff. She walks back to the door and looks at Daryl in his eyes. She embraces him tightly and closes her eyes. "I love ya, Daryl. I'm so glad we are back together again. I will see you tomorrow." She says as she pulls away and walks to the house where she will be living, and Negan's cell below it. She looks up at the house and then down at the cell bar. She doesn't want to tell Negan the good news; she will tell him tomorrow after she settles in and gets herself ready for bed. She walks into the house, looks around, and smiles. She knows she will make this place she can call home with her decorations and her way of arrange them it, how she want them it. She walks to the bedroom, looks around, and nods. "Home Sweet Home." She says softly to herself
Daryl softly wrapped his arms around her, holding her close to him. "Love ya too, sis." He spoke softly, before letting her go once more. His arms moved back to his sides before releasing a gentle sigh as he watched her walk away. He was a little worried about her living there by herself. After all, if Negan escaped again, then she would be just upstairs. Of course, he wasn't too sure that Negan would harm her, but he still believed there was a chance.
