Three Small Facts About Cancel Culture
Since a lot of famous people are upset about being called out online here is a friendly reminder to celebrities and normal folks alike that -
One: It is hard to acknowledge when we have hurt people, especially when that wasn’t our intention. That’s okay. It’s natural to feel upset or defensive. And when people are hurt they don’t always use the best words or put things the best way. That doesn’t mean we haven’t hurt them, however, or that we don’t need to make things right.
Two: You don’t have to be perfect or say the exact right thing all the time. All you have to do is say, “I’m sorry I did that. I know now that it was hurtful. I can’t take it back but I’m ready to do better.” That’s it. That’s enough. Recognize the hurt. Apologize. Commit to moving forward.
Three: It is always okay to ask for help. If you don’t really understand why something wasn’t okay, ask for resources to educate yourself on! Ask if anyone you trust has the time to talk through it with you! Check out books and podcasts and articles! You don’t have to do it alone, and most people who call out your behavior from a place of love will be happy to help you learn and encourage you along the way.
