Dressing for an Ultra in the Heat
I celebrated my 45th birthday with a 50k trail run in June. I love the Missouri heat, but knew I would need to dress smart to avoid overheating, chaffing, and overall comfort. My brother wanted to support my adventure, and told me to meet him at a mall so he could buy me a new outfit. I had a lot of questions for the various staff members that helped me because of the expected temperatures that day. And boy was I educated that day! So many different types of material promising so many things!
The most impressive thing I have to say about that day, and something that contributes to my customer loyalty when shopping, is the staff telling me “no” more than they tell me “yes.” I was choosing shorts and tanks based on cuteness, styles, and colors I liked. Many of the choices I picked were fun, but not necessarily for my upcoming adventure. The staff at stores that educated me on fabric content, comfort, and overall functionality were a major blessing that day!
I settled on an outfit from Lululemon for that day. Not because I don’t think there are other products that are just as good, this just happened to fit what I was looking for. It was important to me that I have a material that not suction to me when soaked with sweat. The material of the items I picked promised not to do that or I would get my money back. They stayed loose, light, and comfortable. Nothing stuck to me! I am thankful for the staff members that were educated in their product and committed to redirecting my choices. If I had been left on my own to shop, I might’ve looked cute, but I wouldn’t have been near as comfortable. With their help, I was cute, comfy, and left the run known as “that girl that was always smiling and looked so happy.”
