#kdramawomensweek - Day 5: Can I Handle the Seasons of My Life? (Prompt from 2022)
✦ Ha No Ra - Twenty Again
Day 5: Can I Handle the Seasons of My Life?
Adult women and their relationships with their younger selves; or a woman who is grappling with aging or an age milestone, be it turning 20, 30, 40, or beyond; or woman who is having a coming-of-age later in life.
all these years and one of my favourite profound kdrama moments of all time is still when the protagonist’s son in twenty again found out his mother decided to face it alone when she thought she was dying instead of putting the burden on her family and when she didn’t see anything wrong with this, it devastated him even more. he realized that his father had been instilling condescension towards her his whole life and told him to fuck off. i’d been annoyed with him all series, so to see him finally have that realization and be on the same level of the viewers where he is both saddened and awed by Ha No Ra’s condition was satisfying.
Twenty Again doesn’t have the spirit of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, BUT Ha No Ra and Cha Hyun Seok both have enough similarities to Anne & Wentworth that it does scratch a similar itch.
Like Cha Hyun Seok being abrasive and cold to No Ra because of something she did decades ago, but then losing his shit when he sees other people disregard or belittle her? Classic Wentworth. When her husband dismisses her ability to help around the office and he says “Even if she’s lived as a housewife for 20 years, she’s still Ha No Ra.” That’s “No one is as capable as Anne.”
And, like Anne, No Ra has made herself as small and easy to ignore as possible, and we get to watch her remember to take up space. It’s no Persuasion if they don’t both spend a decade pining for each other, but it’ll do in a pinch.

I needed to find something that will genuinely make me happy a decade or two from now.
