Goodall’s dark, atmospheric images convey a solemn poignancy. During the Covid pandemic, shared green spaces took on renewed importance, and many people experienced a reconnection with the natural world.

Over the course of three years, Goodall has visited areas of British forest and moorland to make images that he refers to as being ‘more akin to fairytale than documentary’. There is indeed an unreal quality to the images, like one of the spooky forests we see in the movies

’In addition to these uncomfortable aspects, I am moved by the silence and stillness one witnesses when out in the wild at night. For me, there is more of a sense of nature’s autonomy after dark - its slow insistent movement happening while humanity sleeps. I see animals quietly snuffling about, not expecting a human to be around – badgers, foxes, deer and owls. I hope this sense of veneration comes through in the photographs as well as the trepidation’

Goodall says: ‘I like the ideas in classical fairytales that use dark threatening woods as metaphors for the unconscious “shadow” aspects of the mind. I’m interested in ideas around being lost, and of loneliness and the symbolic aspects of darkness – it is synonymous with fear of the unknown’

Twilight's Path

Twilight's Path is an ongoing project documenting wild places of the UK after nightfall. At night in a dark wood, one steps beyond the familiar trappings of human life and there is a powerful re-activation of childhood fears and wild flights of fancy - there is something almost regressive about the experience. There is a sense of unfamiliarity about the images; they present commonplace nature in a peculiar way. Artificial light brings a definition and mystery that is not available during the daylight hours.

‘In the darkness, familiar places are psychologically changed; most of one’s certainty about what is there has been removed as you can only see a few yards ahead. When your eyes have little information, your imagination takes over and fills in the gaps. The barrier between rationality and unconsciousness becomes more permeable and some part of you regresses to something more childlike or primal’
