How quickly silence became afflictive had surprised you. Silence was a dead end, silence was a blank screen with a cursor flashing pointedly as punctuation to an ominous game over, and it had begun to be more frightening than you care to admit. It’s the placidity that tears your eyes from the final page of your late night novel. There had been moments, largely when both Sollux and Karkat had been absent in an effort to take care of personal business, when the condo had become tranquil. This was not tranquil. This put a knot in your throat that you couldn't seem to swallow down, and though you were a mere paragraph from finishing what had been a mostly disappointing story, you set the book on your bedside table and leave your room. Your unease is proliferated as you notice Sollux's door is ajar. It’s not near time for his coffee break, and you have trouble thinking of much else that would pry him from the endless clicking of his keyboard or the occasional squeak of a red or blue sharpie jotting down important notes on whatever surface was available. You take a moment to look inside, and the room is distressingly empty. A quick survey proves what you already know, he is not in the kitchen and he had never particularly cared for the living room outside of late night egregiously bad programming marathons with Karkat. Something is definitely wrong, and you waste no time finding your way up the stairs and into Karkat's room. Sollux is there, all rigid peaks and terrible posture, and tense enough that you swore his attenuated limbs would snap if he moved them. You exchange what you are sure is the same look; the two of you did this often and hardly ever was it accompanied by any verbal communication. It was unnecessary, and neither of you would abide uselessness. Your lips press into a fine line, and you can tell by the way Sollux’s jaw shifts that he has come to the same conclusion that you have. Karkat is gone, and as the realization settles a thick irritation beings to burn insistently within your veins. You lean down and lift his comforter, pulling it back as if certain you would find him curled up and lamenting whatever had struck him as particularly unbearable in that moment. For some stupid reason that you can’t articulate or even justify, you are more angry when he isn’t there. Sollux leaves before you do, and you decide that the comforter should remain in disarray as you turn from the room, closing the door only as a courtesy to Jade. You decide to check the notepad in the kitchen to see if he has left you all something, as he did the last time he went missing. It would make you feel better, seeing a hastily scrawled statement of location and questionable mental health, and at the very least you will know he is okay. The smell of coffee assaults you as you descend the final stair, and though Sollux diverging from his set habits should instill a deeper concern, you find it hard to feel anything over the boiling frustration this evening has commoved. From even the center of the living room you can see that the notepad is exasperatingly devoid of Karkat’s terrible penscript, and your jaw tightens as you finally take it in hand stare pointedly, as if it could tell you where he was going and why he couldn’t spare a moment to tell his friends about it. You almost hope he took your credit card as you toss the contemptible notepad into the trashcan. For one, you can’t stand the idea of him having to sleep on the streets, and you aren’t sure if he has any money of his own. More importantly, however, is the fact that its use would give you a location to rain down whatever hell held that moment’s fancy upon him. No matter how much anger you feel, you can’t ignore the the tightly woven unease his unannounced departure has affixed to the walls of your stomach. You have never been more grateful for Sollux’s caffeine addiction.

Karkat frowned at the computer in offense and closed it with far too much force than was needed, hiking it under his arm and trudging up the stairs. If Sollux wanted his ego stroked, then he was getting it with a side of pissy, no questions about it. The bedroom door had a sign that clearly said 'do not dii2turb,' though it was quickly dismissed.

“You want to fix it so badly, fine, fix the fucking thing,” he snapped, practically throwing the laptop at Sollux and almost hitting Rose, nestled next to Sollux and reading a book, with it. Thankfully, the both of them were semi-clothed but Karkat wasn’t going to address that elephant ever.

All Sollux did was stare at the laptop, stare at Karkat, and, unsurprisingly, bitch and moan.
