The fact that the twins are so hurt over this is breaking my heart.
They were obviously socially ostracized since birth, given their interpersonal skills. The only person they really had contact with besides each other was their father. To them he was protecting them. He was wise and spiritual and smart. He was all they had. So, when Korra calls him out, they don't wanna believe he's been taking advantage of them because it means that they'll be all alone again.
