I normally don't hate them but Mahiru and Hajime are the most useless and pathetic bunch I've ever seen when it comes to stopping bullying.
But of course, they're not the only ones! Nobody steps up and says anything to stop Hiyoko's behavior towards Mikan.
At least Mahiru has the excuse of only being around for two of the three chapters that Hiyoko is in. And even when Mahiru’s alive, she’s not actually present for all the times Hiyoko is vicious towards Mikan. (Although the fact that fact that we see Mahiru stand up to multiple other characters’ behavior during that time sure is damning. Though admittedly, those characters are all male... ) But what about everyone else who’s there for all three chapters? What about Kazuichi, often a victim of bullying himself? Chiaki, the obvious proponent of peace and harmony among the group? Hajime, who we know is disgusted by her behavior in his mind? Ibuki, the bond-loving girl who is also the fourth member of the Saionji/Tsumiki/Koizumi/Mioda friend group? It would make sense for ANY of them to step in. Alas, ultimately, none of them do anything.
The only person who ever calls the group out on this kind of shit iiiissss *drumroll*... Mikan Tsumiki herself! — AFTER she's already reverted to full Remnant-of-Despair status.
By the time she starts talking about this, it comes off as though she's just trying to deflect the attention away from herself, because she's pretty well cornered on her guilt at this point. But really, nothing she’s saying is wrong!
Also, as an aside, let’s take a moment to remember Hiyoko’s blatant hypocrisy:
This? This is bullshit.
Thanks a lot for this perspective, Anon 2! I did legitimately wonder if this is some kind of cultural divide - although I can't say I understand where it stems from.
I briefly considered that maybe this was was steeped in the history of the West promoting individualist values vs the East promoting collectivist values. However, that doesn't quite make sense to me because Hiyoko is making herself stand out much more through her behavior. So I couldn't really figure it out.
If you can provide any additional context on why someone’s peers would choose to do nothing about this (either to stand up against someone’s bad behavior to defend a friend from it), please let me know!
Hello?

[An found some and handed it to him]
*Meanwhile Dr B is looking after Vienna, who has a cold.*
[An was still in the clinic, trying to help Dr B]
