Y’all !!! New bloom new bloom
Two cherries on top of my ice cream. As I dig the spoon in, two millipedes climb my hand onto the spoon and eat the cherries. Astounded, I watch as the millipedes start jumping on the spoon, apparently signaling to put the spoon back into the ice cream for another bite. Some days you just don't get a bite at the ice cream.
Two flowers.

I feel like I’ve seen a press release for Two Flowers before. It’s definitely the sort of thing that landed in my inbox last year. The Next BIG THING in the Beverage Aisle: CBD INFUSED SODA! We’re DIsrupting the Kombucha Space, with CBD! CBD! IN! YOUR! COFFEE!
For those who don’t know, CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of many compounds found in cannabis. CBD isn’t psychoactive like THC, Tetrahydrocannabinol for the nerds. But CBD has in the last five years taken off as an over the counter treatment for everything from depression and anxiety to epilepsy and liver disease.
Does it really work? Depends on who you ask. There’s a lot of excitement about CBD from people who grow marijuana and people who sell it. The scientific establishment is less certain. And the therapeutic dose used in many studies is orders of magnitude larger than what’s found in CBD infused coffee or soda.
Which brings us back to Two Flowers. You’ve probably heard once or twice -- or thirty times from a guy named Todd at your local -- that humulus lupulus is related to cannabis sativa. Hops and pot are basically cousins! Yeah, Todd. We heard you. Someone at Coalition Brewing thought it would be clever to combine hops and weed in a single beer. Thus Two Flowers: a hoppy India Pale Ale with five grams of CBD per bottle.
Of course, they didn’t just add a dropper of CBD into each glass. Coalition brewers went to the source and added THC-free hemp juice during the brewing process. The juice adds its own grassiness to the beer and citrus-y terpene oils, which complements the oils coming out of the hops.
The result isn’t too bad. It’s a classic Northwest IPA. On the nose, Two Flowers smells like a handful of fresh herbs and a pinch of orange zest. The first sip is bracingly bitter, but overtime those citrus notes begin to peak through. It’s nothing new, flavorwise, but it’s nice. Did the CBD boost affect my mood? I don’t know. I’m known to be an anxious person, but Two Flowers seems just as effective as a normal beer at calming my nerves.
