So, I was lookin' at the sprite of the Two-legged rhino lizard from Dwarf Fortress. I'll be honest, I kinda felt it didn't work.
Like, I absolutely get where they're goin', but it felt unclear.
Now, of course, this isn't any criticism t' DF's Pixel Artists. There's hundreds if not thousands of sprites in Dwarf Fortress. I just felt there was somethin' wrong wi' this sprite. Somethin' lackin'.
So, I then looked at the regular Lizard sprite.
'Hmm, that's far better.' I said t' meself.
The obvious follow-up question is, of course, 'Why do I think that's better?' and the answer was I landed on is because it's clearer. The colours, specially the eye is clearer as it isn't the same colour as nearby shading.
So, I thought 'If a few colours on the Rhino Lizard were changed I think that'd be an improvement.' and, naturally, since I can test that, I decided to.
Now, I think this is a far clearer version of the sprite. With a total of 5 pixels changed the horn and the lizard's face is much more discernible.
Here's a side-by-side
Now, of course, it's entirely possible someone disagrees and thinks my edit is worse. Or that there's very little difference at all. Taste is taste, after all.
Still, I enjoyed this exercise. Maybe I should do some pixel art again one day.
