What do you think is the cause of the fanfiction comment drought?
Readers use different technology to read stories.
Readers have seen authors react negatively to comments they did not like.
Readers feel entitled to things that other people produce.
Readers do not know that writers want comments.

#fanfiction etiquette#comment drought#fanfiction comment crisis#fanfiction#fandom#original posts#by 'comment they did not like' I do not mean only unsolicited concrit#comments that writers don't like include...#two-word comments#requests for more chapters#requests for faster updates#comments that were not entirely praise#comments that were entirely praise but the author disliked anyway#comments that included non words a la YAAAAAYAYYYYAAAAY or HAHAHAHAHAHEEEEHEEEHHEEE#unintentionally solicited constructive criticism#I don't remember seeing a writer react negatively to unsolicited constructive criticism but it seems plausible to me#I think technology is probably a big part of it but#if you leave a comment and the author says 'If you're going to comment like THAT just SHUT UP and keep it to yourself!'#then a lot of readers will do just that#they're respecting your wishes and keeping it to themselves
