This is one of the families we brought a despensa to in 2015. When we arrived at the house the three girls came running up to greet us, but the other girl just sat shyly in the doorway of their home. At first we just thought that she was being cautious because we were strangers but then it dawned on us that her immobility was because she was disabled. We learned that she was developmentally disabled and nonverbal, but that she was also unable to walk. They showed us how she was able to scoot around their home on the concrete floor and she was even able to pull herself up on the hammock all by herself. That evening and the following morning we just couldn't shake the image of that little girl being confined to the four walls of her home. We went to FB, posted pictures, wrote her story and asked for assistance in helping this girl to get a wheelchair. Within hours we found someone who had recently gotten several wheelchairs donated and this little girl was blessed to have been one of the recipients of of them. February 3 we will be heading back to the Mayan villages to bring more despensas and to seek out families in need. Something as simple as a wheelchair has given this little girl the freedom to go outside of her home and be with her sisters.
