So the tradition of wearing a kilt pin is supposed to have come about in the Victorian era. And the modern safety pin also came in around the 1800s I believe.

But when Jamie got sent back to 1746 he clearly still has a safety pin on the front of his kilt

Which is just like. A very tiny thing but it’s a tiny thing from Jamie’s time travelling with the Doctor, some small seemingly insignificant little accessory that managed to slip through and hold on. It’s a tiny memento he has no memory of ever acquiring, and no idea of the significance of still having it.
