Four ways that Chiropractors take care of themselves: 1.) Eat balanced diets In moderation, is how I have to have to talk to myself about food. I remember back when I thought that a TV dinner was a well balanced meal even when I only ate the dessert and the meat. I, much like many Americans today, didn't have any idea about health with the notion of the food pyramid. Now anti- inflammatory is what I focus on today. Excess inflammation, among other things, can cause excess pressure and pain in the joints of the back and throughout the body. Which includes BEETS (which help cleanse the liver). A dusty mix of turmeric, cayenne pepper, cinnamon, and nutmeg grace most of my breakfast foods including, but not limited to oatmeal, fruit, yogurt, and chia seeds in addition to my coffee or tea. Got to get it in somewhere and somehow and best to do it sooner than later! As a flexitarian (one who eats a little or a lot of animal products at a given time), moderation stays key. I try to eat 2 times the amount (in a pile) of vegetables compared to the meat on my plate (which I try to limit to the size of a deck of cards). Cheese and other dairy items such as sour cream, yogurt, and ice cream are treats I allow myself 1-3 times a week. Without the supplement Zypan, after eating these treats, I will blow up like a helium balloon at a barnyard party. 2.) Exercise Man, I'm not the best at this one, but I do make efforts. Each day I do a minimum of yoga mostly at home and mostly watching/mimicking "Yoga with Adriene." It may not seem like much, but it is better than nothing. Parking farther away from stores, taking the long way around at work, the mall, or out while shopping also adds a few steps here and there. Using the stairs when an elevator is available is helpful too! Carrying the goods I plan to buy in bags I bring from home not only helps the environment (and in most stores, gives you a $0.05 refund), but also is my weight training at a minor level. I recommend to the AMAZING Patients at Two Lane Chiropractic to walk a minimum of 30 minutes a day. Five minutes out and five minutes back 3 times a day. Fifteen minutes out and fifteen minutes back one time a day. And ten minutes out and back 2 times a day PUTS YOU OVER THE 30 minute recommendation. Yoga is a great way to remain or become flexible and strength training for most. Modifications are an option to stay active without injuring oneself and if you're not sure- ask your teacher prior to class- or if it hurts, ask after. In Des Moines, most yoga studios will offer a free class or a discounted rate for a short duration to see if it works for you and your needs. 3.) Meditation and Mindful thinking Every morning, on a daily basis, I meditate for a minimum of 5 minutes. I let things from the prior day come and go along with ideas of what might be in my way for the day or time to come. Sometimes it takes longer and when I have or make time, I take advantage. Many years ago, a friend told me that affirmations don't work because deep down, we know we're lying to ourselves. ...Huh, as the Great Amy Poehler says, "Good for you, not for me!" I really believe my affirmation keeps me on my game of owning and running a business and being a productive and supportive member of my community. We all have our "things" that may be keeping us from doing what we can or want to do. Affirmations remind me that I not what all my haters say(unless they just talk about how awesome, smart, liberated, and productive I am! Then let them talk!) I will not disclose my daily affirmation(s), but I will tell you I listen to Larry Markson (Chiro-geek extraordinaire), Pema Chodron, Abraham Hicks, Bentinho Massaro, Tara Brach, JP Sears, and many more for purposes of affirmation and meditation. 4.) Chiropractic Care Well, duh. What kind of practitioner let alone human, would I be if I didn't get adjusted?! A piece of work, if I do say so! The mentors that have and do make the most impact on me and my life including my practice have always told me THEY get adjusted each week and I have as well since...2010 with a few exceptions which I own. Keeping a healthy nervous system intact has been what has taken the wool from my eyes, keeps me upbeat and productive, as well as keep sickness (of which I was once prone to) at bay until it needs to happen. My life is clearer, better, and more fullfilled since I started getting adjusted in 2008. I have to practice what I preach and I get adjusted regularly so I can not only represent the 14% of the population of the US that gets adjusted, but also I can show the benefits of Chiropractic. "Be the change you want to see," is one the most powerful quotes Gandhi ever said and I take that notion to heart and to life. Relieving the pressure from my nervous system changed my life in inexplainable ways until I became more active in the Chiropractic community. I had a boost of energy once I started to get adjusted. I started to think a bit more clearly instead of blindly accepting information that was offered. My depression and anxiety became more manageable. I wanted to achieve instead of exist. Chiropractic care can and will add years to your life and life to your years if you choose it to be so. The choice is yours.
