I Want A New Party
I was having brunch with a mentor the other day, and we were discussing some politics. And I stated something about the two parties. Democrats want to control our public lives, while the Republicans feel obligated to control our private lives. And after this mid-term season is over, I start to think.
I don’t wanna bitch, but… What will it take for the American public to wake up and bring an end to the two party system.
When our nation was founded, John Adams, the first Vice President, had a fear of political parties. “There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.” He said this in 1789, and now, 225 years later, in 2014 look at where we are. On the right there is Speaker John Boehner and Senator Mitch McConnell of the Republican Majority. On the left there is President Barack Obama, Senator Harry Reid and Representative Nancy Pelsoi on the Democratic minority. And since 2006 when the Democrats took over the majority in Congress, these forces have been working against each other and not for the American people.
Each side claims they are on the side of Angels. But here is the problem. Delete the President’s election in 2008. Every election has been a vote against something. In 2006 we voted against President Bush, in 2010 we voted against President Obama, 2012 against the scary Mormon, and 2014 once again against President Obama. How is that good for the Republic?
Now, partisans on each side will point out, it’s the other side that is unreasonable. Ain’t that like one ass hole, calling another ass hole, an ass hole. I think that might be the actual definition of redundant. The last government shutdown, that was a pox on both their houses. Yes the House Republicans were jerks for the demands of Obamacare, but, the President was acting like a child when he refused to negotiate with them. This has to end.
My last entry here, I mention better leadership, that is half the battle. The other half has to be the end of the tyranny of the two party system. And only we can make that change. The Republicans and the Democrats are vested in holding onto their monopoly. We have states like California, New York and Texas that are never in play during a Presidential election. They are so locked into one party, the only reason a candidate comes there is to raise money. Also not good for the Republic.
Now I feel confident in my saying this, because I practice what I preach. In 2000, 2004 and 2012, when it was a given the Democratic candidate was going to win California's electoral votes. I voted for a third party candidate, to add one more voice for change.
Right now, a reactionary Republican Congress will face an uncompromising Democrat White House. And what will be accomplished? Nothing. Republicans want to give nothing positive for the President, and Democrats want to block anything the Republicans want. And who is hurt by this game of chicken? The American people. The economy sucks, the job market sucks, and the national debt rises. We need change, and we need it now.
Most polls have somewhere around sixty percent of Americans identifying as independents. Those who identify as either Democrat or Republican at all time lows. Though I do believe Democrats are slightly ahead.
The question has to be, since Washington we've always had two parties, and we are still here. Why change now? Because the system is broken! Look at people on the left and the right who have lost the primary because they were too moderate. The more extreme flanks of both parties force people to fringe, and makes a general election harder. Look at the last two GOP Presidential candidates. Both McCain and Romney were considered moderates. McCain was known for finding compromises with Democrats, and Romney was a popular Governor of uber liberal Massachusetts. To get the party's nomination both men ran to their right, and were unable to get back to the center.
It is time for a change. In two states, Vermont and Maine both their junior Senators are Independents. Angus King and Bernie Sanders, both of whom caucus with the Democrats. But they are there. Angus King was also an independent Governor of Maine. And through recent history we have had big third party or independent wins, Joe Lieberman of Connecticut or Jesse Ventura of Minnesota.
Democrats always cry that Ralph Nader costs Al Gore the Presidency in 2000 and Republicans also complain H. Ross Perot cost George Bush re-election in 1992. The truth is they did not. Both misters Perot and Nader were entitled to every vote cast for them. Another complaint is too many parties will cause gridlock. Because now is such a smooth and open process? Are you kidding me? The 405 during rush hour has less gridlock than Congress.
When we look around the globe, most democratic nations have more than two parties. And they appear to have less gridlock in them. And countries like Canada, Northern Ireland and Scotland all have at least one party calling for secession from the nation. Yet they seem to get more accomplished than our government.
It would be a good thing, for a simple reason, it would allow the moderates in this country to move forward. Imagine, people like Ted Cruz would not be forcing the Republican Party to the extreme, he could be the leader of the Constitution Party. Rand Paul could become the leader of the Libertarian Party. Elizabeth Warren could become the Green Party leader. Allowing the Republican to being the centre right party of Barry Goldwater, and the Democrats could return to the center left party of Bill Clinton.
HOW DO WE GET THE CHANGE?
First the media needs to help. Going into the next Presidential cycle, would it break the bank for CNN, the FOX News Channel or msnbc to assign one reporter to cover alternative candidates. No. All three are owned by huge media conglomerates. That is all I am asking one reporter from each network covering the Constitution, Green and Libertarian Parties. And do not decided who is a true candidate until the voting has begun.
The argument is that they cannot win, so why cover them? They cannot win, because no one is covering them, thus no one knows who they are.
Second we need to take a look at our ballot access laws. Currently the laws favor the two major parties. And both go to court to force out alternative parties or candidates. If you want to run for office, getting on the ballot should be the easy part. Getting elected should be the challenge.
Third and most importantly, we the electorate need to be willing to take the chance and look beyond the standard Republicans and Democrats. And ignore the people that claim that you are throwing away your vote. In fact, ladies if one of your liberal friends says that, grab your left breast and tell them to suck your left one. And guys, when your conservative friends say the same thing, grab your crotch and tell them to suck your right one. And of course vice versa.
Of course that's just my opinion, I've been known to be wrong.
