Things I enjoyed in The X-Files 11x01:
Mulder violently slitting the throat of a man who was trying to strangle Scully.
Things I didn’t enjoy:
Literally everything else.

In My Struggle III, Mulder’s monologues...
...sounded off to me.
You know back in the day, when Mulder gave a monologue, he did speak in a kind of monotone. But not a “phoning it in” monotone - this isn’t a criticism of David’s past delivery - it felt like this was a window into Mulder’s psyche. It was a melancholic stream of consciousness that felt quiet and thoughtful. It had an effortless ponderance to it. It was very Mulder.
Good examples are season 2′s Little Green Men opening monologue, and season 8′s Essence opening monologue.
But the monologing he does in My Struggle III sounded very strange to me, like David was trying too hard to emphasise the emotions - like he was telling a story and acting out each part. When as a stream of Mulder’s inner thoughts, it didn’t necessarily need that “flair” to it. It would have felt more natural and continued that tradition set by past episodes, to have Mulder’s inner voice be the same as it once was - a calm, almost distant visage of his thoughts.
I hate to say this, but it didn’t feel like Mulder.
Guys can someone PLEASE give me a link where I can watch/download last night's episode? Pleaseeeee
So I went into the X-files revival with the very encouraging words from a friend of “I really hated it, don’t watch it”.
Ignoring that advice I watched s10 and it was...well I didn’t much like ep 1&6 (aka the overarching plot episodes), ep 5 was a bit yikes, but eps 2-4 weren’t bad. In all it wasn’t the best but worth watching? Yeah I think so.
But
But now I just watched 11x01...
What. The. Hell. Happened??????????
My exact words to my friend after finishing it were “Please just kill me now”
The ehm... plot twist was the worst part, but just the music and dramatic sound effects and weird camera work was slowly killing me the whole episode
I don‘t think I’ve even seen a show take such a jarring nose dive in my life
I can’t even
Is it just me, or is this current season of the X Files deliberately attempting to trigger memories of certain original-run episodes? In other words, to me at any rate:
William in 11x01 evokes Emily in 5x07.
Langley in 11x02 evokes Esther in 5x11.
The Poundstone twins in 11x03 evoke Modell and Bowman in 5x08.
This isn’t a complaint, by any means, it’s more wondering whether this is all intentional and the similarities exist for a specific reason. Maybe it’s just me, but the parallels in the stories have been to clear to ignore, and it makes me wonder if we’re seeing real life or if we’re stuck in a vision or dream or some other altered reality.
Is it possible that Scully did not actually wake up in 11x01? Is there something to the fact that so far it’s been S5 episodes that have been the first to come to mind in each instance? Or is it possible that I’ve been obsessing over the X-Files for 24 plus years now and I’ve reach Mulder levels of conspiracy theories?
