TXHSHoops: Instant Reaction (January 5th)
12-5A Boys: #16 West Mesquite (15-5) 103, #11 Rockwall Heath (13-4) 89
It’s a rarity to score that many points in four quarters of a high school game. Luckily for West Mesquite, its players and coaches had been there before, once on the winning side, and once on the losing end. The Mustangs opened the season with a 108-85 loss to Allen, and they followed that up with a 100-69 win against Greenville four days later. Experience from these outings was the biggest factor in tonight’s win because the stars from both teams showed up. Rockwall Heath had a lot of comfortable wins, but their resume lacked a triple-digit game. Heath was immediately at a disadvantage, and the final score portrayed that.
Andre Watts and Coye Campbell played in their third 100-point game this season, and they finished as the night’s highest scorers. Watts scored a game-high 26 points, and Campbell added 22. They outmatched the Hawks’ duo, Tyler Zivney and Camron Talley. Zivney finished with 19 points, and Talley added 18, but the Hawks fell to 2-1 in 89 point outings this season.
What’s next? West Mesquite hosts North Forney on Friday, and Heath travels to Forney.
10-5A Girls: #19 McKinney North (15-8) 49, McKinney (13-7) 39
“Anything can happen in a rivalry game.” I wrote this sentence in this morning’s preview, and it perfectly described tonight’s game. The teams sat in unique situations after the opening quarter. McKinney North jumped out to a 27-4 lead, but its players, coaches and fans knew the game couldn’t be this easy. It was the most recent chapter of the rivalry, and both teams were playing for something. Bragging rights and school pride are always up for grabs in the “Crosstown Showdown”
McKinney players and coaches would face adversity at school tomorrow if the team didn’t put up a fight. The Lions achieved that, outscoring the Bulldogs 35-22 over the net three quarters. They didn’t win, but they saved face. Quincy Noble had a game-high 15 points, and JaMiya Braxton added 13. On the winning side, three players finished in double figures.
What’s next? McKinney hosts Wylie East on Friday, and McKinney North travels to Denison.
8-6A Girls: #1 Duncanville (24-0) 55, #15 South Grand Prairie (18-7) 38
The Pantherettes began their big week on the right note. Ciera Johnson dominated the paint, and filled the stat sheet in her team’s win. She finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 blocks, and 2 assists against the Warriors. Kayla Wells and Amber Bacon continued their successful seasons, but their team was on the losing end tonight. Wells finished with a team-high 15 points, and Bacon added 11.
What’s next? Duncanville travels to #9 Cedar Hill on Friday, and South Grand Prairie hosts Grand Prairie.
