Found a type crime in my friends’ office. Shame on you...
A bar sign specifically created to annoy typographers?
Apologies if you don’t understand what’s written in this image but it’s not really that important anyway and it might make it easier to spot the crimes. This was thrown on Facebook to advertise a new TV series which is currently being shown on Maltese TV.
This possibly holds the record for highest number of crimes committed in one paragraph. Where to start? Leading is wrong, spaces after apostrophes, rivers. All of this just makes it almost impossible to read.
And in case you were wondering: that’s not an isolated comma on the 4th line, but an apostrophe on the 5th.
A generous leading of 1.5 times the font size usually does the trick but this of course depends on the font you are using and its x-height. Rivers can be avoided by finding the right balance between column width and font size. A few adjustments on either can give better results, a continuous and more flowing paragraph making it easier on the eye.
Why that glyph? Ok, it’s obvious that the font didn’t have a question mark available, but placing a random one at a random size doesn’t really solve the problem. This is perhaps one of the problems encountered when downloading free fonts such as this, but that’s another story. Finding the right typeface when working on a project can be hard, but make sure that your final choice serves its purpose before committing yourself.
So, I was looking at the course catalog for one of the local high schools here in my hometown
and the entire thing
I shit you not
the entire fucking thing is set in Comic Sans.
