things you said at 1 am + rika/chishiya — @xoteajays
aaaaahhhh i've been daydreaming about this convo forever i'm happy i finally got to write it down!! thanks for the request!!
Rika hums quietly to herself, leaning her head against the wall. The office building she and Chishiya have taken shelter in for the night isn’t exactly built for sleeping, but even if it was, there’s no way she’d be able to crash. The adrenaline from barely escaping the King of Spades with their lives hasn’t died down yet, still keeps her hands twisting her knife around and around to keep them busy.
A vibration through the floor catches her attention, her head whipping at lightning speed to face the window. Chishiya’s hand is flat against the floor, eyebrow raised at her from where he’s made a makeshift bed out of the seats of rolly chairs, nestled in the corner facing her. The moonlight makes his hair look lighter, casting a shadow across his face as he pushes himself up and quickly signs, Humming louder than you realize.
Sorry, she signs back, flinching at the pain shooting through her shoulder at the movement. Yeah, being shot is going to make signing a lot harder. “Sorry,” she repeats out loud, careful to not project too much.
His eyes flit to her shoulder, then to her leg, where blood still stains her pants from her second hit. “How bad is it?” He asks, enunciating his words clearly. The warm feeling in her chest almost disguises the burning in her shoulder.
“I’ll live. More bothered by the blood,” she lies. “I liked these pants.”
Chishiya stares at her for a long moment, eyebrows furrowed like she’s a puzzle he can’t figure out. “You don’t have to lie.” The not with me is unspoken, but still rings through the room.
She purses her lips, shrugging her left shoulder. “Would it make you feel better if I told you it hurts like a bitch?”
“No,” he says shortly. “I would feel better if you weren’t shot at all.”
Rika's eyebrows raise abruptly. “Oh, so you do like me.” She smirks with delight, cocking her head. “And here I thought you’d dance around your burning attraction to me until your death.”
His lips twist upwards slightly before immediately leveling out. “When we first teamed up, you told me you’d do whatever it takes to get out of here. Last night, you took a bullet for me. Were you lying when you said that?”
His dark eyes bore into her, exposing her in a way she never did with Karube or Aguni. Her first instinct is to lie again, deny, deny, deny, but he can read her better than anyone else. And honestly? She’s not sure she wants to lie to him. “I wasn’t at the time. I’d be lying if I said it now, though.” Rika levels her gaze, meeting his eyes unflinchingly. “I’d do it again, too.”
Eyes crinkling at the corners, Chishiya scans her as if looking for any sign of a lie. Probably is. Finally, he leans back. “You shouldn’t. Next time it’ll get you killed.”
“And how would you feel about that, Chishiya?” A flicker of hope burns in her chest. She knows, but she wants so desperately to hear him say it.
His eyes darken. “You know exactly how I’d feel.” He pauses as the hope dies out before adding, “Don’t risk yourself for me again, Rika.” And then he lays back down, shutting his eyes and curling in just enough for his mouth to be out of sight.
Asshole.
