Analysis: Three Speeches
Upon watching and analyzing the three clips of speeches by the three different speakers. I’ve noticed how the three speeches firstly differ according to their purposes. With Nelson Mandela’s speech, it was an example of an Exploratory or Informative speech, since he obviously came to inform, particularly regarding the rough history between the United States of America and democratic of South Africa, and how despite those past abuses, both countries have now established a respectful and cooperative relationship or partnership, of course without any sort of resentment being present whatsoever. With Emma Watson’s speech, it was an example of a Persuasive Speech, since she clearly came to persuade or convince, regarding mainly Gender Equality and Women Empowerment as well, and how both needs to be given more attention or focus. Since, as she said, most of the discrimination or inequalities women face are only mostly thought of lowly, even showing how fighting for oneself is treated or seen differently among different genders. Lastly, with Darren Tay Wen Jie’s speech, it was an example of an Entertainment speech, because not only did he focus on imparting important life-lessons in relation to bullying, he also executed his over-all speech in a lighthearted and entertaining manner, as to why the audience’s laughter was heard across the clip as he stated out the funny aspects of his speech.
Now going further, each speaker has achieved his or her specific purpose of informing the audience as well. For Nelson Mandela, he achieved his purpose of informing the audience; once again with him speaking up about how both U.S.A, a developed country, and South Africa, a developing country, have united for the common good. He’s even managed to gain a positive response from them; which would mean, most if not all of his listeners have understood well what he wanted to convey and have been properly informed. For Emma Watson’s speech, she’s also achieved her purpose of persuading and convincing her audience, of course with the outstanding and captivating delivery of her speech which was well-written, containing a lot of strong and convincing points. Though not only did she, probably, convince or persuade her listeners at that event, she’s also impacted the numerous watchers who have watched the clip of her speech. Now for Darren Tay Wen Jie, he’s achieved his purpose of entertaining his audience, though his speech being about bullying. In a way that the laughter of his audience was observed throughout his speech, which would be a sign of him delivering the speech well. Not only did he successfully entertain his audience, but his speech was also sensical, not only focusing on the comedic aspect.
Lastly, would be in regard to the manner of delivery of each speaker’s speech. For Nelson Mandela, basing off from the clip, he was reading or speaking from a manuscript. Since specifically, he had a copy with him upon the delivery of the speech, which he used, since it could be seen how he kept on looking down at his podium and only occasionally looked up, in order of course to continue reading his speech accurately. Since it was a formal occasion as well, this manner of delivery was reasonable for Mr. Mandela’s case. For Emma Watson, it would seem that she delivered a memorized speech, or has fully memorized her speech. Though having a copy of her speech, as shown in the end, it could still be seen how in the entirety of her delivery, she’s never appeared to look down, of course implying that all her statements came from her heart and her immersion in the delivery. Lastly, for Darren Tay Wen Jie. As entertainers usually give out impromptu statements or speeches in their performances, I can’t exactly say that this could be the case for him, since it seemed like he has every detail of his speech laid out or rehearsed, leading me to only assume that he has memorized his speech beforehand or has delivered a memorized speech. As I’ve observed, his delivery didn’t possess any qualities of being spontaneous as well.
