Social Type final outcome
This is my final poster design, I did not change a lot on it after my critique as it seemed to have the emotional response and effect I was looking for, sparking conversation…

Social Type final outcome
This is my final poster design, I did not change a lot on it after my critique as it seemed to have the emotional response and effect I was looking for, sparking conversation…
Social type
Politics has never really been my thing so being prompted to create a poster dealing with a social issue was difficult for me. I not only struggled to find an idea and stick with it but found it extremely hard to think of how I could evoke a response. I started researching political issues and has come across a few I could touch on
What are socio-political problems?
They affect society
Each problem affects certain groups
After this I started drawing out some ideas which I was hoping one would kinda speak to me. unfortunately it did not work like that
These were my top three choices and still could not find a way to express them on a poster so I went back and did more research.
By this point I was getting frustrated that research was not helping me and though these evoked a response within me I was not able to appropriately express them graphically at this point.
My dissatisfaction grew with this project, so I left it alone for a while and tried to think “what are you passionate about?” And still there was nothing…..
By some miracle it hit me what are everyday working class people struggling with…. INFLATION! Coming to this sudden struck of inspiration the ideas just started flowing this was the first basic set up
Then the word came and the background which I remained undecided between this blue colour and green.
Ultimately I decided to go with green to symbolize money. the people are silhouetted so that they are ambiguous and represent any and everyone in society as losing your livelihood can happen to anybody. Often times those who are in a good place turn a blind eye to those in need like the homeless making them seem almost invisible. The percentages for people living in deep poverty as well as homelessness has been increasing by around 2% over the last few years as the basket of goods or basic necessities keep rising. Something has to be done…
This was a few hours after the last posted picture, By this point I was over painting the negative spaces around the letter forms and questioned my choice in hand painting this sign. Furthermore, I was concerned that I had made the type specimen to dark on the top right hand side and quickly found out I was right....
As you can see It blended in way to much in this photo, so I started mixing small amount of colour and testing them trying to figure out what hue/temperature I needed that would make it stand out from it background enough but still give a faded look on brick, almost half hour later I found it.
I had a helpful critique from a couple of my classmates who had mentioned that it would lend more into the new and old look I was going for if I could maybe find a high gloss finish that I could lay over the green area to make it look more like a highway sign, I was extremely grateful for this as I had never even considered it... so I went out a bought some but the act of putting it on there was terrifying as I have had experiences with finishes where they will smear the paint.
This product works pretty good and apparently will NOT yellow over time however, the paint did smear slightly. I will add to this post with the finished outcome in a few days as I did not take a photo of the finished project before handing it in
Designing a Typeface
designing this typeface sounds like a fun experience, i took mu inspiration from a book I made of Medicine Hat.
I started with some of random letters of the alphabet and found out that the H and O are probably one of the best letters to start with as it gives you ur box letters and your round letters
Originally I was thinking that I would go with a blocky serif and thin and thick strokes. Which would also allow me to incorporate the clean blocky form of a sans serif typeface. I quickly discovered that. though it looked good it was not the look I was trying to accomplish and was more greek or slab looking.
changing to a more pointed serif i felt it conveyed my thoughts of combining the sans serif and serif typeface as well as taking my inspiration of combining new and old past and present in a much more sufficient way. by this point I had already drawn the typeface 4 times and knew what I wanted but I didn't know exactly how I was going to present it. I would have liked to done this on a metal sheet, but unfortunately I am a broke college student hahahaha. Considering many different materials from wood to canvas and vinyl to ink. I knew I need something that was gonna be sturdy but not stiff and a medium to match so I decided to go with illustration board and acrylic paint.
I dont know what the F to do for typography I've been pondering on this for hours ahhhhhhh I hate working with objects, GIMME 2D TYPE, IT'S THE ONLY THING I'M GOOD AT. /cries
