And they said the only time that the slaves were allowed to leave was when they had a Master or Mistress with them. Hah. Clearly they never tried singing ‘Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen’ for an hour straight. Especially when the only lyrics you know are “Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen, nobody knows my sorrow.”
You could actually annoy the guards into shirking their duties. Who knew, huh?
Still, Jonah was glad to actually be out in the open. He got to go through the gardens quickly, but now his guard escort, who was glad to do this so long as Jonah would just promise to shut up in the future - which he would, provided he kept getting to leave his cell enough to get some actual exercise and vitamin D.
It wasn’t like he was out doing jumping jacks or anything mind you, just getting to enjoy the scenery of the island. He’d slept most of the ride over, and he had never really been to British Columbia before. The farthest west he’d been was to Edmonton, and that had been as a trip when he was still a kid.
It was pretty here. Maybe someday he’d like to live in BC instead of Ontario. But that was a thought for another day, in no small part due to a shadow hovering over him, interrupting his meditations, and it clearly wasn’t his guard - she’d been keeping a steady distance in case he started singing again.
“Can I help you?” he asked the shadow’s owner.
