ITS AIGHT... I literally have 25k words written of a russingon fic and just have to write the last scene but I've been getting distracted lol. I will have some time around Thanksgiving so maybe I will finish it then!
Hey! Love your meta on Hal and Barry. I always wondered tho: who adopted Barry after his mother died and his father went to jail (in the comics of course)?
so, the answer is sorta vague if barry was ever truly “adopted”.. there’s a panel that came out recently that implied that he was in the foster system for a bit as a child but it’s not confirmed..
in the comics barry is taken in by captain darryl frye of the CCPD.
darryl had feelings for barry’s mom, and in fact barry’s mom & dad were in the process of getting a divorce in n52 flash before nora was murdered, implied due to her reciprocated feelings for darryl. because of his feelings for his mom & his fondness for barry he takes him in after she was murdered and his dad was sent to prison, but never formally adopts him.
he’s more of a “legal guardian” than a “father figure”. barry never insinuates that he sees him as a father. he’s beyond grateful for darryl taking him in and giving him opportunities that he might not have had elsewhere, but they are never really shown as being “close”. barry didn’t really grow up with any parental figures past the age of 10. darryl was just the guy who gave him a roof over his head when he had nowhere else to go.
darryl maybe tried?? to become more of a father to barry but I think that he felt incredibly guilty over causing a rift in barry’s parent’s relationship because of his feelings for his mom and probably blames himself for her murder somehow. i also think that barry wouldn’t be receptive to having anyone try to become more of a father to him when his own dad is rotting in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. he knows that he still has a father, he doesn’t need another father figure to fill in the gaps.
