Just Dip Your Toes In 🐚 [Paulina]
@paul-patts
Attina was sitting cross-legged on the floor, counting the inventory of their photo frames--which were lined up by make (plastic, wood, carved wood, metal (and then by particular metal), and other) and then by size--when the bell above the shoppe door rang.
She didn’t move, though, since Andrina was (supposedly) minding the front of the store.
“Tina!” She heard a familiar voice call.
“Back here, Simba!” she called back and looked up as her friend came around the corner. “Hey, you.”
“Hey yourself!” Simba chirped, looking positively gleeful.
Attina raised her eyebrows as she reached out to pet Bowie, who Simba had brought into the shoppe with him. “How’re you doing? How’s Ber?”
“Oh, good! We’re good!” Simba opened his mouth and then closed it, like he was going to say something else, but stopped himself at the last moment, which was curious. Her friend could never keep his mouth shut about anything. He was a terrible secret keeper.
There was an awkward silence.
“Did you need something? Andy is up front.”
“Andrina? Pfft, no she’s not.”
“Well,” Attina said with an eye roll, “she’s supposed to be.”
Simba shrugged and it was silent again. He bounced on his toes a little.
“Simba, not that I don’t love you--but you look like you’re about to burst. What’s up?” She squinted up at him.
“Check out Bowie’s collar,” he finally blurted and then grinned.
Wrinkling her eyebrows, Tina scooted closer to the dog and moved his golden hair out of the way of his blue collar, feeling around the fabric until her fingers came across a little note tucked into it. Pulling it off she rubbed at Bowie’s ears with one of her hands as she opened it up.
Attina,
Lakeside. Tomorrow. 12:30. Challenge 2 shall commence eminently.
Paul.
Attina smiled, then laughed a little, then blushed. “Did he rope you into this?” she asked, looking up at Simba.
“Uh, no, well--kinda but, I’m here for it. Babysitting the tots and everything while you’re out, too. You are going, right?”
“Yes, of course I’m going,” Attina answered, and then blushed again.
“Good.” Simba sidled closer and pressed a kiss to the top of her head. “If he hurts you, I’ll kick his ass,” he said as he straightened back up.
“Thanks Simba!”
He gave her a little wave as he headed back out of the shoppe.
Fast forwards to almost exactly twenty-four hours, Attina on her way down to the lakeside. She had panicked for about twenty minutes last night about wearing a dress or shorts, since being so close to the water would make her skin act up something awful (looking vaguely reflective and translucent when the water was near it), but, in the end, she knew she could just play it off as being pale...she’d done it before.
So, dressed in a pair of cute coral colored shorts and a light blue blouse, her hair softly curled, Attina bounced up to the lakeside the next day. She spotted Paul easily, spread out on a blanket--a proper picnic.
Her smile grew as she flounced up, putting her toes (in a pair of sandals, toenails painted bright orange, to match her fingernails), right up against the edge of the blanket.
“Gotta give a girl fair warning next time,” she chastised him, her smile bright. “I can’t put a good outfit together on 24 hour notice. It takes opinions from six people, you know how hard it is to track them all down on such short notice?”
