Ubi sunt?
Dónde están lo que ya no están? Qué hay más allá de la muerte? Hay dolor, oscuridad y sombras? O simplemente color, calma y paz?
The Voice of the Ancient Bard - William Blake (from Songs of Innocence and Experience)
Youth of delight come hither. And see the opening morn, Image of truth new born. Doubt is fled & clouds of reason Dark disputes & artful teazing. Folly is an endless maze, Tangled roots perplex her ways. How many have fallen there! They stumble all night over bones of the dead And feel they know not what but care; And wish to lead others when they should be led.
Woodcut from The Image of Ireland by John Derricke (1581)
Bards (who are not the same as the Irish 'filidh' or 'fili') were those who sang the songs recalling the tribal warriors' deeds of bravery as well as the genealogies and family histories of the ruling strata among Celtic societies. The pre-Christian Celtic peoples recorded no written histories; however, Celtic peoples did maintain an intricate oral history committed to memory and transmitted by bards and filid. Bards facilitated the memorisation of such materials by the use of metre, rhyme and other formulaic poetic devices.
