Are we surprised at Lotte Kopecky's defense of her world championship? Not really, although there were moments when she was dropped that we wondered. We are impressed with Chloe Dygert's second place, that's the American's best road result all season. Elisa Longo Borghini's third place wasn't what she hoped for, but still a testament to her form this year.

Preliminary estimates show the UCI Road World Championships far exceeded its crowd predictions with 645,000 spectators coming to the course over nine days, race organizers said Sunday night.
That’s almost 200,000 more than what organizers have been touting for more than four years and a significant increase over the last time the event was in North America.
The numbers are preliminary but are based on several criteria.

Peter Sagan of Slovakia won today's grueling elite men's road race, the last event of the UCI Road World Championships, with a remarkable final lap push that earned him a three-second victory.
Sagan surged in front with a powerful surge up the 23rd Hill. He then descended brilliantly, dropping into a low-profile tuck and zipping through the corners as he approached the final climb at Governor's Street. There, he was never challenged.
Sagan completed the 162.4-mile race in a time of 6:14:37. Michael Matthews of Australia finished second in 6:14:40. Ramunas Navardauskas of Lithuania placed third in 6:14:40.
Alex Howes was the top U.S. finisher. He placed 12th. He, too, was assigned an official time of 6:14:40.

Lizzie Armitstead won a dramatic sprint finish in the women's road world championship Saturday, powering past Anna van der Breggen and then holding on by about a half-bike length.
The British sprint star, who rued a missed opportunity to stand on the podium a year ago in Spain, clasped her hand over her mouth and burst into tears moments after crossing the finish line.
Van der Breggen added another silver medal to the one the Dutch standout captured in the time trial. Megan Guarnier won the sprint among several riders for bronze, the first won by an American in the elite road race since Jeanne Golay finished third in 1994.
Earlier in the day, Felix Gall of Austria beat Clement Betouigt-Suire of France in a photo finish — they were awarded the same time — in the junior race. Rasmus Pederson of Denmark was third.
