Holden Torana/Sunbird (UC), 1978 The UC replaced the LX, and represented the final evolution of the Torana/Sunbird. Gone was the V8, leaving only the 2.8 and 3.3 litre sixes, and the 1.9 litre four (Opel first, later a "Starfire" unit—essentially a 2.8 litre six with two cylinders removed). As before, the Sunbird name was used for the four-cylinder models. The hatchback was deleted in 1979, leaving only the sedan. Facing increased competition from more sophisticated rivals such as the Chrysler (later Mitsubishi) Sigma, Toyota Corona (which used the same Starfire motor), Mazda 626, Ford Cortina and even Holden's own (now smaller) Commodore six, the Torana was dropped in September 1980. While a four-cylinder Commodore was available for the VB/VC generations, Torana's true replacement arrived in 1982 with the JB Camira. #holden #torana #holdensunbird #uctorana #gmh #50yearsofthetorana @holdenaustralia
