The Maiden is basically a psychopath by occupation. She is unnervingly cruel without batting an eyelash and basically took up cruelty as a profession. As an Abysmal Exalted, it is her job to destroy Creation as it is their purpose in life. Where others of her kind see it as nothing more than a job or even see it as a kindness, she fully enjoys the work.

Shanku showed psychopathic tendencies even as a child. She got her start torturing animals and remembers it rather fondly, enjoying their reactions to pain. One thing she also remembers fondly is something that happened when she murdered her own parents. She recalls the look on her mother’s face as she did it as one of her happiest memories. Already, we’re showing signs of something not being quite right with her.

Kenda was also good at hiding her true nature. When she was 12 and murdered her nanny, her parents never suspected her. In fact, they still saw her as the sweet little girl they had always raised. She got good at cleaning blood stains and even started planning out a thousand murders to commit. Clearly, they never did a good job or paid enough attention to her sadistic tendencies. Without proper guidance, she continued on this dark path. All things considered, it may not have even mattered in the end.

All of this ties into her need for stimulation. The Maiden clearly enjoys the job more than most Abysmals and knew what she was signing up for. The idea of destruction is something that she enjoys. Even when she was younger, Kenda viewed hiding her true nature like it was a game and often had to take out her violent tendencies on other prey to keep from going after people.

And her complete lack of empathy comes out in everything that she has done. She showed no remorse for killing the nanny and even contemplated murders after that. She also dissected her siblings as well, showing a disregard for them as well. And, of course, there’s the murder of her parents. Kenda killed them, burned the house down, and remembers that incident fondly.

It’s not really surprising that she ended up becoming and Abysmal. Especially one under the employ of the Mask of Winters. All he wants is a rabid dog who will destroy without hesitation. Considering her motivation stated above, he got that.
