What is Urodynamics Study, and Why is it Needed

It rids the body of wastes and extra water in the form of urine. However, sometimes the urinary tract is unable to do its job effectively. Urodynamics Study (UDS) is done to check how the bladder, urethra and other parts of the urinary tract are storing and releasing urine. These tests are done to see why there are urine leaks and other urinary problems.

There are several types of tests. A urologist may recommend one or more tests, depending upon the symptoms. Usually, all the tests are performed as one test. Common tests are:
Uroflowmetry: This test is done to estimate the speed and the volume of the urine. The patient is expected to come to the doctor’s office with a full bladder. A special instrument measures the quantity and speed of the urine. This test evaluates whether the bladder muscles are strong enough or not.
Cystometric test: This test is done to analyse the pressure of the urine. A catheter is inserted through the urethra and the volume and the pressure are observed and noted.
Electromyography: Electromyography is done when the urologist thinks that the urinary problem is due to nerve or muscle damage. The test assesses the voluntary contraction of pelvic floor muscles.
Postvoid Residual Measurement: This test is generally recommended to those who are unable to empty the bladder completely. This test measures the amount of urine left in the bladder after urination. An ultrasound equipment is used to take an image of the bladder and see the amount of urine left.
