Uelen is the easternmost inhabited place in Russia and Asia, over 6,000km and 9 hours east of Moscow: in fact it is in the Western Hemisphere.
Uelen is situated on a sandspit separating the Arctic Ocean from the Uelen Lagoon. It’s just south of the Arctic Circle and has a polar climate: for eight months of the year average temperatures are below freezing and the ocean and lagoon are turned to ice. Chukchi people make up the majority of the inhabitants.
