UEnd's Blog Action Day, blog on water

In honor of Blog Action Day 2010 (always on Oct 15) this will be a special blog on water. As you many know Water and Sanitation is one of the nine cause areas on the website. Why do we have these projects? Well if you review the breadth of projects on the site it becomes apparent that clean water eliminates all sorts of issues related to poverty such as water born illness, access to water close by frees up time to work longer hours (thus more money in the house), going to school (because of fewer sick days) that is only to mention a few items. Read some of the project descriptions for more information. So... if you can eliminate all those issues for a community for $10000.00 by buying a well would you? UEnd thinks so.

Corporate Social Responsibility and links to UEnd

This is the second in the Blog series on Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR). It will be about ideas on how CSR might link to UEnd activities. If we accept the definition that CSR is about representing the company in the community with a certain set of policies while engaging and interacting with various communities then the following are ways that a Corporation could utilize the database and flexibility that is UEnd to achieve some of their ends. 1. Employee Engagement- This is a way of engaging young employees and giving them the power to decide where to spend their money from an employee matching scenario or even a job well done achievement. 2. Corporate employee gifting- this often happens. It takes the form of the promotional gift, the holiday and birthday gifts cards to Starbucks or Tim Horton's. Instead give them a gift card at UEnd whereby they can impact the world, in the same way they impact your company and they get a gift that does not gather dust plus the corporation gets a tax writeoff. Bulk gifiting is also possible. 3. CSR in satellite offices where you may not have the time to investigate reputable project partners. The Corporation can adopt a project in that community through UEnd. We only work with reputable successful organizations so it takes the guess work out of it. If we don't have one, UEnd can work together with your Corporation to find one in the country where you will be setting up a satellite office. 4. Secret Santa gifts- encourage the groups to adopt a project instead of buying some $20.00 something that no one wants or needs but you can keep the true spirit behind giving alive. I am sure there are other ways, as you know UEnd is all about giving you the power to help end poverty.

UEnd Community Development Project Focus

This will be the final post for the Community Development Series. As is the norm, this post will look more closely at one of the projects on our site from the CD perspective. This project is the Dheri Development Education and Empowerment Project. Please go to the link for more information knowing this is a great example of the principles that we support in all of our projects. The following excerpt explains the community development approach exceedingly well. "The Base Module Program is the key development component for bringing the village of Dheri out of extreme poverty in a sustainable way. It guides and trains the villagers to develop their own solutions to build a future where they can live in relative prosperity, peace and harmony with nature. Care is taken to ensure that a maximum number of people own the vision and are engaged in its implementation. Through this process, the entire community is equipped with the motivation, skills, knowledge, and resources to create change which is real, equitable and lasting." The skills are developed in a local context, with local leadership, ownership and development. The solution is the peoples' and will always be theirs allowing the skills to stay in the community. What makes the CD approach so effective is the confidence to use the same process to handle future community challenges that results from having experienced it once before. From UEnd's perspective this is the only way to responsibly spend your gifts.
