What next for Bantamweight division after UFC 169?
Another event in the books, which usually get's our taste buds salivating for the next event, right? Not so fast. The Bantamweight division has some issues to sort out before we move on... Urijah Faber: Let's get one thing clear, he is my favourite fighter - just remember that if you feel there is a slight sense of bias... Where to start? One, he took this fight on very, very short notice, and two, the stoppage was.. well, terrible. Fine, 0-6 in his last six title fights, sure it isn't a good record whatsoever, and you can dissect it however you wish - I dissect it like this... so what?! It's clear that everybody that gets in his path towards a crack at the title is tossed aside (he has seven career losses - all title fights), he's number two in the world (majority of the time), and last time I checked, people want the best two in the world to compete in any sport. So what next? Clean the division out again? Rematch? Wait for Cruz to get healthy? Move weight? Honestly, I don't know. All I do know is, Faber is a animal, he'll train for any challenge the UFC put in front of him, title shot or not. The guy bleeds this sport and he bleeds his team (Team Alpha Male), he always has his team mates back - he even gave TJ Dillashaw a shout out for the next title shot, seriously, who else does that?? What I'm getting at is this - whatever he does next - he'll be supported, he'll support the decision, and you and me are sure as hell going to watch it. Renan Barao: - 32-1 (1), his record... 7-0 in the UFC. - 33... since his last loss. - Escovedo, Pickett, Jorgensen, Faber, McDonald, Wineland and Faber... his seven opponents since joining the UFC. There isnt much more to say now about Barao, yes he probably needs to beat Cruz when he returns. But we all should be having him in the Pound for Pound conversation. What next? Time depending, Dominick Cruz. It needs to happen. If not, I like Raphael Assuncao if he gets by Francisco Rivera at UFC 170. Bantamweight Rankings: Here is my Top 10... 10. Mike Easton (Coming off decision loss - TJ Dillashaw) 9. Erik Perez (Decision win - Edwin Figueroa) 8. Iuri Alcantara (Decision loss - Urijah Faber) 7. Takeya Mizugaki (Decision win - Nam Phan) 6. Michael McDonald (Submission loss - Urijah Faber) 5. TJ Dillashaw (Decision win - Mike Easton) 4. Raphael Assuncao (Decision win - TJ Dillashaw) 3. Eddie Wineland (KO win - Yves Jabouin) 2. Urijah Faber (TKO loss - Renan Barao) 1. Renan Barao (TKO win - Urijah Faber) As you can see, no Dominick Cruz, he just can't be included right now. There is so many parts to dissect from these rankings; - Faber has beat five of the other nine fighters in the list above - that's crazy - As good as McDonald is, he doesn't have one victory against any of the top tier guys - Dillashaw is ranked five, I'd imagine he'd find it hard to fight his team mate Faber and he has a loss to Assuncao already, tricky situation - Alcantara is 1-1 (1) since moving back to Bantamweight, hardly a a record that demands a top five guy - Barao holds victories over the number six, three and two (twice) fighters The UFC needs Cruz back as soon as possible, Faber to go on a three fight win streak again, guys like Mizugaki and Assuncao to get some notable victories, and maybe even a return to the Bantamweight from Demetrious Johnson. enjoy, stay safe, peace...
