Liberation Day
Liberation Day [trailer]
Ex-Yugoslavian cult band Laibach becomes the first foreign rock group ever to perform in the fortress state of North Korea.
One of the more bizarre stories. Though once you hear that director Traavik has been there a number of times it becomes slightly less strange. Given Laibach's use of controversial iconography, it still makes your head spin.
One highlight is a North Korean official reading a summary of accusations against Laibach during dinner.
It raises the old question. Since it is a dictatorship carefully creating an 'image', the regime micromanages the show and demands lots of changes. Which every single one, no matter how tiny, the band accepts. So the question is, are you becoming part of the propaganda when you perform. Or is it still a good thing to engage, in hope it will lead to longterm change because the final show is still something the people haven't seen before, and they will likely remember.
