She looked up at him, forcing herself to smile. Relief registered on his face when he saw her expression. Well, at least one of us is happy, she thought, slowly removing the lamp from its box and setting it on the table next to the couch.
He had been so distressed when he inadvertently shattered her previous lamp. Regardless of her protests, he had insisted on replacing it. And…this was the result.
She plugged it in and switched it on, stepping back to admire it.
At least the color was right: a muted, dusky purple to match her conservative wisteria purple and beige living room set. “The color is perfect,” she said out loud on whim, glancing back at him to gauge his reaction. The pleasure on his face was indescribable.
She smiled – a real smile and walked towards him, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Thank you,” she murmured, rising on her tippy toes to kiss him softly.
“Are you sure?” There was a touch of worry to his voice.
She responded by molding herself against his body. He reflexively pulled her in tightly against his chest. “It’s perfect,” she whispered, looking back at the lamp.
And, for a moment, she was convinced of its perfection. The strings of transparent plastic beads hanging off the lampshade could be said to add character to the room. In fact, she felt like she could grow to love how they manipulated the pool of light created by the lamp. It added a serene glow to the room, a lot subtler than her previous lamp.
“I was worried,” he confessed as she continued to survey the results of his handiwork, “I spent six hours trying to find something that would work. I know how attached you are to your color schemes.”
He was teasing her, she could tell. She considered faking offense for a moment. Instead, she replied, “That’s very sweet of you. I appreciate it. It’ll be nice to have something of yours in here…especially for the nights you’re gone.”
“You’re never in this room, anyway, silly,” he said, pulling her onto the couch with him.
“I’m glad you’re here,” she said, snuggling up against him.
The light from the lamp painted stripes of purple across his skin. It looked ridiculous. Perhaps she would arrange for the new lamp to have an accident sometime, but, for the moment, it was perfect.
